Laser Spine Surgery - Ongoing Extreme Post Op Pain

Hi. I am new to the forum. I went to EDITED and had the laser spine microdiscectomy and neural decompression procedure for a herniated disc that was compressing a nerve at the L4/L5 level. Ever since the surgery, I have had way worse pain than before the surgery. Now I live in pain every day at a level of like 8 out of 10 or higher. Mainly the pain is only bad when sitting. After the surgery, I took physical therapy for several months (and that helped me get over the foot drop that I unforunately had after the surgery). I am able to walk okay now. I have a burning pain around the L4/L5 level in my back, along my upper left buttock, and on my left side of my hip.

I am currently seeing a neurosurgeon who put me on Baclofen 80 mg / day (20 mg 4 x per day).

This is not helping the pain. I am looking for answers. Can anyone help me? Has anyone experienced something similar? I am considering accupuncture, massage therapy, hypnotherapy?? I have had 2 steroid injections in the last 2 months neither of which helped.

Please tell me I am not alone. I am losing hope.

  • you are so unfortunate to have gone through surgery and not received pain relief. how long ago was the microdiscectomy?
has the neurosurgeon recommended another mri. it could be that a piece of the disc broke loose and is floating around irritating nerves. or maybe there is another herniation. is the neurosurgeon the one that did the surgery? if so i would get 2nd opinion.

  • Also - what about asking for a discogram. You have to figure out where your pain is coming from. It really sounds like your surgery did not remove the herniation. I would for sure be getting a second opinion if you are with the same surgeon.

  • I'm sorry you are having more pain than prior to surgery. What does your neurosurgeon think is going on? Does he feel it is related to the laser surgery?

I know my ortho spinal specialist has had to repair several unsuccessful surgeries that patients had at one of the laser clinics. If your current neurosurgeon is not addressing your problems, you may want to look for another one...or a fellowship-trained orthopedic spinal specialist.

The medication he has you on is a muscle relaxant. You maybe should be on a medication for nerve pain...something like Neurontin (gabapentin) or Lyrica to see if it will help with your pain. But first, it sounds like you need an accurate diagnosis to know what is going on now. It is possible the laser surgery has caused a new problem.
