Hello :)
I have sympathy for all of you who suffer from lower back pain for the last 4 years i have suffered sciatica and degenerated disc in my lower spine, the thing is it nows seems to me that the sciatica returns in regular interviews i do take 30g cocodomal 4 times daily and find at times these dont help and i have heat treatment on my lower spine.Im almost 40yrs old and to be honest going out of my head from the lack of help i recieve from my doctors, the pills cause a acid reflux which doesnt help the stress from the pain and because i recently moved to England from Scotland i now have to start again in trying to get the doctor to take me seriously. Over the last 3 months i have fount it difficult to control my self during the pain to get the bathroom in time often resulting in dampness.A friend told me about this site saying its wonderful for support etc, my immediate family do understand but i suppose unless you suffer this pain you never really understand how bad it gets.I basically wondered how i can get my doctor to take me seriously as he already seems unconcerned that my medical records from Scotland are not updated on his computer.Im not a slacker i love to work and my past jobs have all been heavy labour from working on the land to care assisting the elderly. Any input would be welcome and my heart goes out to each of you who live with this pain xx

  • Hi and welcome!
I'm from the United States so medical care works quite differently here. Have you had an MRI? If not, my question would be what are your symptoms?

Sounds like leg pain, leg weakness, but do you have numbness in your leg, groin, foot? I think others on here might be able to provide some good advice for the UK.

Here, in the US, I would say find a fellowship trained Orthopedic Spine or Neurosurgeon doctor.

I suffered Sciatica since I was like 23 but only had occassional flare ups and figured out what caused them (twisting and too much impact) and when it got bad, I would get a presription NSAID (anti-inflammatory) which would help reduce the inflammation. I also went to PT to learn some exercises to help offload the pain. These exercises work if your disc is bulging or has early signs of DDD. My pain was intermittent which is why the doctors never took MRI. So, if this is the case, I would at least try to ask him for a prescription for physical therapy.

If it's worse...I hope others can help you figure out how to press for an MRI. The question is, are you seeing a general doctor or a spine specialist?

Hopefully you can get to a spine specialist.

I know others will offer good advice.
  • Welcome to SH. I sure can understand what you are going through. I too have DDD from my c-spine to my siatica. It really does cause lots of problems. It is so hard some days. Thats when I just get busy doing something to take my mind off of it. I hope you can find a Dr. that will help you. It is hard to find a good one. I finally found a good one and he is listening to me and we are going to start with mri's then ESI and if that doesnt work then surgery. I hope no surgery.
Hang in there and if you need to vent we are here for you. God Bless and have less painful days!

  • I have not had MRI yet, there is pain in my groin and i have lost 20% strength and feeling in my left leg so the physio told and the doctor in Scotland was talking about a rod down my spine but where the vertebrae is damaged its amongst a nest of nerves so he gave me 50/50 chance of walking again.I have spoken to my doctor here but he isnt prepared as yet to do anything until my med notes come from Scotland.Im now getting acid reflux and i think it could be due to the tablets which seriously seem a waste of time taking they dont seem to work at all.I go back to see him tomorrow but at the moment im using a cane again as i have just had a terrible cold and the coughing as i caused even more pain.I went for a medical recently as im unable to work and even though i have told the examiner and he saw with his own eyes how bad i was he failed me on the examination so im having to appeal.I feel so angry atm that i just want to scream at them all but it wont help i know.
But thanks guys for answering its nice to know im not so alone now xxx
