  • Welcome to Spine-Health support forum. If you've spent any time here reading you know you've come to a great place for information and support (both to give and to get).

Am sorry to report that I'm not going to be any help to you, either. I've got cervical problems, with a foraminotomy behind me, but your level of problems is much greater than mine and I don't even know where to start in giving you support or answers except to send healing thoughts your way. There are a number of serious cervical spineys on this forum so I'd expect you'll start getting some responses in the next few hours. :)

  • Hi Frances and welcome..Ive had from C4 to C7 fused and also L3/5,L5/S1 and an artifical disk at L4/5..

I found the cervical surgery post op was very painful with the swelling and nerve and arm pain..My arms hurt for around 6 months as they had to readjust to the fusions..That was 18 months ago..

I rang my Dr and he increased my medications to cope in the early stages as you would know by now, it hurts to swallow, cough and even talk..I also ate loads of iceblocks and anything soft and cold helped.

Maybe you could let your Dr know that your pain is extreme and hopefully they will increse your medications..

Ive just recently being diagnosed with Fybromyalgia which explains some of my current pain and Im having 2 trial SCS's put in next Wednesday for 4 days as I have ongoing thoracic and lumbar pain and Ive found what I think is the best, kindest and caring Pain Specialist in Australia..As I tried the nerve burning and facet and SI joint injections not working well and I had 16 of them in the past 12 months..

Please feel free to PM me if I can help you any further.

Take care and let people fuss over you as youve just been thru major surgery..

  • Welcome to Spine-Health.

I've also had a 3-lvl ACDF (C4-7) and have recently started having problems above my fusion. I'm not getting any arm symptoms, so I'm not dealing with those right now.

But I had been having probems with my right hand and shooting pain up into my elbow (note: up to my elbow from my hand, not from my neck to my elbow). During this time I was in PT for my post-op lumbar surgery, and my PT told me I had carpal tunnel syndrome in my right arm and my surgeon said the same and that because of the levels that are the problem now, the kind of pain I'm having most likely won't come from those problem levels.

So I've been wearing a hand/wrist brace and it helped with my hand/arm/wrist pain to a great extent. So until you see your NS on the 27th, you might want to see if that helps. The way my PT tested for carpal tunnel was squeezing the muscular/fatty area between my thumb and forefinger. Being right-handed, I very little of anything inbetween those fingers on my right hand as opposed to my left hand, where there's plenty of flesh.

I'm not saying by any means that this is your problem, but for a few dollars at the drug store, it might be worth getting a brace to wear, especially when you sleep, to see if it helps.

Good luck on your appointment and please keep us posted.
