Hello to all,

My name is Luis from NYC and my doctors at the V.A. Hospital just scheduled me for L-4,L-5 neck surgery on Jan 31,2011. I need feedback on this, the pro's and con's. I am also a heart patient with multiple stents, is this surgery safe for me?

  • Hello and Welcome Luis!!

The levels you mention are in the Lumbar( lower back ) area and you said you are preparing for a neck surgery? Are you having both??

    Just wanted to welcome you!!
  • Sorry, yes both

  • Your have neck and L4 -L5 surgeries at the same time?

WOW! That is a new one for me to hear about - but maybe not for other members here. Hopefully one of them will see your post and stop by to help you out :)

As for being safe from a heart point. Did they do a echo on you?

My brothers echo is only 30% and he will soon be having major surgery.

I assume your cardo Dr has OK you for this surgery?

    Please keep us updated :)
L1 - S2 "gone" useless in 1 way or another. DDD. RA. Bone Spurs. Tons of nerve damage/issues. Stenosis. Both knees replaced. 50 yrs old. I had a great fall (hence my user name) at age 41 and it has been a domino effect every since.
  • I know with my surgeon, he'll work a cervical issue, or a lumbar, but not both at the same time. That's a bugger for recovery!

As for whether the stints in your heart makes surgery safe, sorry we aren't medically trained to give you an answer there. We're all spine or nerve patients here. I'm sure you've let your spine surgeon know of these, and he/she will know if it's safe. I do know that in Miami, the pre-op clearance for surgery is a must, so something like stints would be in the mix for approval or denial. Please let us know how it goes. Take care, and Welcome!!!
