Loss of Mobility after Spinal Operations

:))) Recently I seem to have lost the propulsion in my legs and my back pain has become severe again! Has anyone any idea what is causing this as I am quite worried? I had injections on 10 December 2010 to L4/5/6 and S1 as there was some swelling around that area thought to have been caused by movement of metalwork in spine. I have also got quite bad pain in cervical area. I am due to see my Surgeon on 26 January 2011 so hope he can come up with some sort of solution as this is beginning to get to me. My balance has also become very bad and I seem to stumble backwards!

Previous operations: Rt Knee replacement in 1998 followed by revision in 2000 as original operation had not been done correctly. Lt Knee replacement in 2006. PLIF plus rebuild in Dec 2008. ACDF and removal of 3 discs to C4, C5 AND C6 in September 2010.

  • :))) Follow up to my forum of 21 January as I have today seen my Spinal Surgeon. I have been sent for very urgent MRI and CT Scans as he feels problem is just above the metalwork put in on Dec 2008 operation but Scans will confirm this or otherwise! Should this be the immediate problem the Surgeon will have to open me up again, take out existing metalwork and put in new extending further up the spine. Both scans are to be of the complete spine. Apparently the big operation in 2008 has put undue stress on the remainder of the spine!
  • Wow keep us informed.

    Feel Better,

  • its not uncommon for adjacent levels to develop probs, after fusion, as they take on the extra work.

but certtainly not good for us , having to have fusions.

im glad to see your surgeon is scanning your full spine , its what i needed, but nooooo, they doing it in seperate MRI"S, which doesnt make sense, had one , now have to wait for the other

i hope you get some answers as to whats going on

    hang in there
let us no wat happened, ok
    take care
  • I am so sorry that you are facing this!
Problems with the hardware after a fusion is not what we want to hear.
However, if you are having severe pain and problems with your legs, if there is a way to get rid of it, that would be helpful.

Do let us know how things go and what treatment is decided upon.

A bit like flower, I am waiting for the results of a cervical MRI scan that I have had and am waiting to have an MRI scan on my lumbar spine due to nerve problems in my legs and feet.
I wish they would just do the entire spine as I do have problems in my thoracic spine which are causing pain and tightening around my chest.
I think they want to ignore that because it is hard to fix!

I seem to remember that you are in the UK. What part? Hopefully, you won't have to wait for too long to get this sorted.

  • Further to my forum of 21/1/11 I have now been told by my hospital that I shall, despite being on the very urgent list, have to wait for my scans until 4th March then to see Surgeon on 11th March. My mobility is worse than ever and I keep stumbling and have to be very careful when I am outdoors. The pain is very severe around my neck and shoulders also at lumbar region of spine. Even my painkillers which are tramadol and paracetemol are having little effect and the other morning I awoke very early soaked in sweat! What is going on? Pain in cervical area is worse than before my ACDF operation in September 2010! Any
constructive advice would be very welcome.

Previous operations: tkr Rt Knee 1998 then revision 2000.
tkr Lt Knee 2006. ACDF C4, 5 and 6 with removal of discs replaced by titanium cages and bone grafts on September 2010.PLIF with rebuild on December 2008.
