  • That's just not right cancelling a re-booking for October! That's outrageous. I'm still awaiting my EMG tests from May 30th and she was all concerned looking for my first MRI and other Drs I've seen and so concerned about my weak ankle and they haven't got back to me and when I call she has 30 charts on her desk. It's so ridiculous and hope I can find another Neurologist who follows up their patients. It's frustrating for sure but try to get your Family Dr. to get the test results if possible. I hope you can find a good Orthopedic Surgeon soon to help. Thinking of you.. Charry

  • Thanks so much Charry. I sort of 'knew' they would cancel again given the holiday weekend, coupled too with all the last appointments, but "October" put me over the top! What is sad is in fairness, I don't know if his schedule really is that tight, he doesn't want me as a puzzle patient, or his office staff is behind this, but every appointment in the last 12 months they've pulled this crap the day before my appointment! But 4 months?? Argh!

Fortunately I am one that gets all my reports, CD's and doctors notes when done, so I have them. I did like 4 hours of surfing tonight, and added like two more possibles to the list. They are Neurosurgeons though - I want to lean towards Orthopedic this go around for my neck. One particular OS I am impressed with, so I am leaning more and more in his direction.

I will probably call my NS for an appointment to see the "overall", but more specifically for my back issues. I have a lot of bone loss in my neck (fusion areas), so I want an orthopedist experienced in revision for my neck at this stage. I'm still cool and trusting of my NS for my lumbar issues. :) My NS doesn't do a lot of revisions from what I remember. This new surgeon I am looking at does "revisions, reconstruction" etc.

They won't fax you your reports or let you pick them up? Funky... Some facilities mail me my reports, others like my last, I go to the hospital (records section) and get my reports - and I don't leave a facility without the CD in hand... I hope you have answers soon too Charry. *HUG*

  • Geez I wonder what the person on the phone was thinking when you said they were fired!! Did they say anything at all? My guess is that if you don't hear from the doctor today that they wanted this to happen. If it really is just a schedule issue then the office manager should be calling you. Of course I can't imagine a neuro who is booked four months out. Mine is pretty busy but can schedule tests and appts each month.

I'm wondering if what the other doctor said about him having "problems" is the real answer. Doctors just like patients can get sick or have personal problems.

No matter what you need a doctor who is able to meet your needs in a timely manner. Good luck with the interviewing :) Oh and finding a cute one wouldn't hurt the eyes any

  • how annoying.

As you know, here in the UK, we are used to waiting, but to keep having your appointment cancelled must be very frustrating.

I do hope that you will be able to find another doctor you feel happy with, and will get a quick appointment that will give you answers and help to formulate the plan to deal with your problems.

    Gentle hugs >:D< >:D< >:D<

  • Geting in to see a specialist is diferent all over the map. Some are so booked up it can take a year to get in to see some. If you wanted to see a neuro at the mayo clinic most cases takes a year almost to get in to see 1. But that might be because they are the best in the world and people from all around the world go there.

To some degree i always felt when its too easy to get in to see a specialist might be because he obviously is not over booked and could mean he is not that well known and just posibly not 1 of the best around. They all somehow claim to be the best it seems. They cant all be the best for we would not all be suffering. Great dr,s dont have shortage of patients. There are so many dr,s that will perform surgery its not even funny.

I was smart enough to take my old man to mayo to have liver transplant but was not smart enough to take myself to have my surgery done by them. Which is my mistake and i am paying for it now for life.

Most of the time it can take a year or longer to get all the right testings with most drs here before they find whats realy wrong and what should be done if you are lucky. Or even years. While people go to the mayo clinic and once they get in, in 4 to 5 days they had all the tesring while there stay at a near hotel. If you see the specialist on monday they set up all the testing thats done right on there facility and most of the time everything you needed to find out you have results by end of that week even with the most complicated cases and you heading home friday or saturday morning..

Mayo is the only place i ever seen with this kind of servise to patients who get tierd of the run around by dr,s in there state and never are able to ever find out sometimes whats there real issue is and what needs to be done about it. I have family members who swear by the mayo clinic and wont even go for a check up by dr,s anywhere else.

There is a reason why the richest people around the world travel half way around the world to the mayo clinic. I know there is more then just 1 they have in the usa. Arizona and frorida i think is wherw the other 2 is but i was at the rochester mn one which i believe is the original. It has to be cause i visited the mayo brothers house there that they have buss tours to telling the history of the mayo brothers

There is a nice river runs right next to the mayo house and i got some fishing in while i was there. Wish i would have just had my surgery there and i could of cought that giant bass that got away.

Brenda have you considered going to the mayo to get a solid opinion for you have multiple issues and it might be worth a shot just to see what they tell you before further going foreward to get the best posible medical advise that no other dr can despute?

  • I fully agree that the doctor can have personal issues such as sickness and such, but *every one* of my appointments got changed, so that kind of blows that option out for him. Again, I still do like him, and more importantly respect him and his experience/knowledge. I just got so bloody tired of the short notice cancellations, and too the huge lengths of time for the reschedule.

I haven't heard from them today, and don't expect too. After I said, "That's it, you are fired. I am getting a new Neurologist", all I got was "yes ma'am," and I ended the call. It was like she expected my response?

A small part of me considered writing him a note about my "disappearance", but figured *they* (the office staff) would open it, and screen it...so dropped that idea. Just so frustrating....I guess years of being his patient amounts to nothing. (G)

  • Howdy Ms. Jelly!!!

I hurt each time I hear how long you have to wait (MRI results, testing scheduling, doctor appointments etc.), but down here, that is not the normal. I even said to my husband (who was going to come with me), "Watch, how much you wanna bet they will cancel me and move me?" 1/2 an hour later, here comes the call!

As I was replying I just had a major "choke out", and thank goodness I am not a breakfast person..would have tossed! When I get these, it makes me even more firm on my decision. Yuck! (G)

Thanks so much Jelly. I am still leaning towards this one doctor, though my list is now (of interest) up to 6...

  • Howdy Alex!!

I've looked at Mayo, and too the Cleveland Clinic, as both have excellent reputations. I am going to do an "e-consult" to see what they say. We don't have either down here sadly.

I fully agree that some of the 'best' can take a year or more to get in, but my esophagus is being narrowed by my hardware moving, so I can't play with 'delays' much more. My ENT saw it, and daily with choke outs (which are getting worse) sees it. Even the MRI mentioned calcification this go around - though not specific to the fusion but "inside" of the fusion. It is pretty obvious on my MRI's "externally" as well - behind my esophagus.

There is a part of me that is sad I had to fire my Neurologist. Again, I respect the hell out of *him* as I've been with him for years, and he has been spot on with me, but 4 months (again) for a reschedule, and too by then my MRI will be 6 months out, nope - not acceptable anymore. I was going to be tossed back to my surgeon anyways, so "a round up" of my tests I really don't miss out?

The other stinky part down here of late? A lot of doctors are leaving private practice and joining "groups", and its like they have a brain transplant or something. I've been with (hope to stay with) my GP for 5 years, but she too joined a group, and isn't easy to get in with either. Not as bad as my ex Neurologist, but getting there.... I read a news article, and apparently a *lot* of doctors are joining groups - more profitable.

Just an option...and opinion...but it's not impossible to get back with your doc. I'm sure they understand the pressure we are under with chronic pain and issues...so you being upset shouldn't be the end of the world...if you want to keep him as your doc.
Also, I've been to Mayo for heart..again for GI and blood vessel disorders. They made my appointments within the month. Not everyone needs to wait.
And esp with your swallowing..and hardware moving.. you tell them that and I would think they would see you sooner rather than later.
    Just a thought...Take care!
