Hi! New to site - appreciate expertise. I have C5-6 and C6-7 issues. My right arm is now going numb at the fingertips and have pain in my head, back and arms. After 3 opinions - all said Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion. NY Presbyterian doc said on both C5-7 and Cornell doc said only need C6-7 because C5-6 is minor and doing both would make other discs weak for the future. I have to surgery. I have come to deal with that - but now what should I get done? Also, I love road biking long distances, are those days over? Thanks!

  • We cant tell you what you should have done. We can only say what we had done and what the outcomes were. Only you can decide what dr you believe and trust. If you not sure get another opinion. Road biking long distance will be depending on the outcome of the surgery. After my back surgery i sold my bike all together for legs hurt and i did not feel safe riding any longer.

Spine surgery is not a simple one and most are happy if they are able to return to work or even back to any quality of life when surgery fails to help the pain. Good luck

  • It's tough to make the decision on how many levels. You didn't mention your age or your history with neck problems. I had the choice of surgery on just C3-4 or C3-7. C3-4 was the worst disc. For me, I could see that over the years the discs got worse and worse, and I thought over time the others would have to be addressed. I didn't want to go through multiple surgeries, scar tissue, etc.

You have gone to very good hospitals - check out the surgeons' backgrounds as well. As Alex said, if you're in doubt, get another opinion, or I'll add, go talk to the surgeons again and make sure you have enough information to make the decision.

There is a lot of information on this site to help with questions you might ask.

  • I had my surgery done by a Columbia Presbyterian NS. Maybe you went to the same doctor for your opinion? I had another opinion from NYU NS prior to surgery. PM me if you want to get more information about who I used. Good luck!
