Preventive care for DDD?

I had an ACDF back in February this year and about 2 months post-op I started having lower back burning sensations that would radiate to my buttocks. Last week I had a MRI of my lumbar and discovered that I have a couple of mild bulges at L4/5 and L5/S1. I will start PT next week, but was wondering if any of you have been successful in preventing further degeneration through exercise or other intervention: yoga, walking, stretching, pilates, inversion table, etc.

I am freaked out about having to require surgery again, so hope someone has a success story and regimen they can share! :)

  • Thank you for your reply! I've been walking 1 hour every other day and swimming about 20 minutes 3 times a week and have seen some improvement. Yes, I have also been reading that rest is not the best remedy! How are you dealing with the pain? Did you end up with surgery?

  • Hi there Lili,

All I can tell you from personal experience is not to do what I've done! I have the same condition as you (DDD plus collapsed disc L5/S1, plus oedema) and have rested, rested, then rested some more. All this has made my back even worse, so don't do what I did and allow it to seize up! Other than that, follow the advice of those who've been more successful - I'm sure their posts will follow.

    All the best,

    Val (UK)

  • hi! i have to say keep moving if at all possible. val is so right about that!! inactivity can be your biggest enemy. i walk atleast 4 or 5 days a week and do stretching every day..swimming is so good for you and to be pain free in the water is just bliss!! =D> of course all of your activities should be under the care of your doctor especially after surgery!! i do hope that PT works for you and that this new pain will be eliminated for you!! good luck and please keep us informed of your progress! stop by the forum anytime.. Jenny :)
  • Thank you for your encouragement! I love this site and get all the support I need. I've been in chronic pain for almost 2 years and hoping the pain will decrease. I'm still recovering from my neck surgery, so I have both pain in upper and lower back. Will check in again soon to let you know how PT goes! ;)
