upper thigh pain 5 years after fusion and no herniation

  • how many second opinions have you gotten? the surgeons partner doesn't count, because of bias.

if you don't have these, sounds like its time. if the hardware screws are loose, that implies that a solid fusion has not been obtained and spine is unstable? see https://www.spine-health.com/treatment/spinal-fusion/fusion-surgery-considerations

good luck. are there really no better surgeons in your state than your one that doesn't know what's happening to you?
  • i just had the surgery to correct a prior mistake by another surgeon 5 years ago. my pain dr not surgeon is doing injection. my surgeon who is a neurosurgeon is first rate and highly regarded. he fixed the break but i still have pain in my right leg that i had befofe. he said there were no guarantees with the surgery.
I have 4 fusions from L5-3, the latest last May '12 where they fixed my disc that broke. They went through my side this time. I take 40 mg of oxycontin 4x a day and 4 fenatyl lollipops 300 micro gms 4x a day.

  • I am too. I am waiting for approval on a nerve block at L2...I pray that works like you have no idea. Pain is crazy. Dropped me to my knees tonight. That has not not happened since before surgery. My surgeon still says his work looks beautiful...guess they all say that, right? I am starting to think that this is just the fusion game...never really get good. Very depressing. JDkids, I am out from a 3 level fusion July also, and its a struggle. I have good days and bad...more bad recently. What kind of pain are you having? Leg, back, both? Can you tell if its nerve pain? I try and figure mine out, always hoping there is something that they can do to fix it. This back crap is really messing with my life...I hate how my family suffers with this right along with me. My poor kids are so sick of hearing I can't because I hurt...I hate saying it anymore. Sounds like such BS...been said so much! Ugh...very depressed tonight...pain is high and I am starting to lose the can do attitude. I hated falling to my knees tonight, gasping in pain. Took me a good 5 minutes to get up...all with my little girl crying in fear...both of us thinking...uh oh, this is the time I dont get up! Peace everyone, E

my pain dr and my neurosurgeon think it is nerve pain but that is a guess on my part. i think it is also.

  • I agree that it's probably nerve pain, but finding the source is now the issue. I'm still thinking about your original post and the flexion x-ray that shows possible spondylolisthesis - your nerve pain is consistent with slippage, thus nerve pain, at the L3/4 level. That's just my opinion from what I've been going through.

Good luck in finding the source and getting the danged thing fixed. Keep us posted.
