Pain, tingling, tightness, soreness, arms, hands and tingling pain in various parts of legs

Good Morning, first time poster on this forum quick snapshot of my issues. Sorry for the novel but I have a complicated history.

In 2004, I was 33 years old, I was having pain in my neck and some strange equilibrium issues....felt disconnected, not really off balance but more of a pressure type feeling that went from my neck to my head. had a brain and a cervical spine MRI, found out I had a herniated disc in C 5/6 with mild stenosis of the spine. I was very anxious about what was going on as there is signifciant history of cancer in my family and I was certain I would end up getting cancer at an early age, after the intital findings I relaxed and didn't have any more symptoms for approximately 12 to 18 months. From 2004 until last fall 2011 I would have these recurring bouts of pain in my neck accompanied by this disconnected feeling about every 6 to 8 months. It would last between 2 and 6 weeks and eventually go away.

Last October 2011, I had another flare up/episode which lasted all of October and November, this time I was getting strange pain on the left side of my face, resonating from my ear down my cheek towards my mouth, I also had intermittent head pain, I was getting nerve shooting pain in my cervical area of my neck as well as pain down my back. End of November 2011 I went in for another MRI of my brain and complete spine (my anxiety was very high at this time, I was not sleeping, eating and I was convinced they would find a brain tumor or some type of spinal cancer in the scan). The brain MRI came back completely normal......nothing, whatsoever, the spine MRI, showed herniated discs in C 3/4, C4/5 and C 5/6, C 5/6 consider moderate to severe the other 2 were considered moderate. Also evidence of moderate stenosis. After finding out that my brain MRI was clear my head/face pain went away almost overnight (obvious anxiety), I started doing Physical Therapy and saw a pain specialist who contemplated
injections but decided to have me go through PT first. Did PT all of December and did great no pain, everything went great, felt great for about a month.

Jan 2012, started getting pain, burning, tingling in both my forearms (the right side a little more than the left) my hands would actually get red and stiff. I never really had any weakness just burning pain down both forearms and hands. Went into see my Internist and he suggested it was just anxiety and put me on 100 mg of Sertraline. I haven't really felt any benefit from the Sertraline as I am still very anxious about what this could be.

March and April 2012 and currently, new symptoms arrived, I now have pain, tingling, burning, cramping in my shins, calves and feet. I am also still getting bad burning pain in my forearms and hands with intermittent spasms throughout my body. My anxiety is at an all time high, I get red patches (like a rash on my skin), of course like many people I have been googling symptoms/diseases ect and scary things like MS and ALS pop up which has me freaking out.

My question is can herniated discs/stenosis cause these symptoms in both of my arms as well as produce pain/tingling/burning in my lower legs? Any help would be appreciated, I am seeing my Internist on friday as well.

  • have you been to a neurologist? I noticed my symptoms getting progressivly worse over a 3-4 month period; sensitivy in my feet, legs & groin area, and wobbly knees; It always felt like i would fall down if I tried to run.

Went to the doc & had surgery 7 days later; degen. disc on C-4,5 & 6; fuzed & ok now. a bone was pressing on my nerve.
Never had any pain, but I have a high threshold.

Now 6 weeks after, still have sensitivity (same areas), wobbly knees (right side not as much) and am curious if there has been any permanant dammage; going back to doc
    in a couple of weeks.

good luck, everyone has diffrent journeys thru this dilema
  • I have the same symptoms of pain and burning throughout my body. I have slight weakness, but not noticable to the doctors. I have a herniation in the C5-C6 region. It is indenting my spinal cord. I have one orthosurgeon that wants to do surgery. I am seeing a nuerosurgeon this next week. You are not alone at all. I have some neck pain and shoulder pain as well. I take gabapentin and cymbalta. Please PM any time.

  • Same issues before surgery and spinal stenosis at C5-C6. Your issues are specific to you. Everyone presents differently. I had similar symptoms.

I was doing fine with physical therapy and then things worsened and nothing was helping. Suffered for several months and finally decided on surgery. In my case, I benefited from surgery. Do I still have pain? Yes, but things are still improving slowly. The longer you have issues, the longer it takes to resolve.

2012 L4-5 herniated disc and hernated disc at C4/5 2013 Taking Amitriptyline for headaches
  • Also I have terrible bouts of sweating and my temperature rising. I have not been offered spinal surgery here in the UK, but I have been put on the 6 month waiting list for an Epidural, has anyone found this to be helpful? I hear mixed stories about its helpfulness and wonder if it will even help with all the peripheral neuropathy etc.
