Numbness in private area and legs/feet after L4/L5 back surgery

Hi everyone. I am 31 years old and I had back surgery 2 weeks ago. After surgery my private area and legs and feet are numb. I am starting to get the feeling back in my legs but I am seriously worried about my privates still being numb. The doctor says it will take time to get better but this is really scary. I can go to the bathroom but have to push to do so, Anyone ever hear of this happening or experienced it yourself? I lost all strength in my legs and am moving around with a walker. Starting PT next week. Hopefully I can get rid of the walker sooner than not. I sure could use some advice. I am starting to get depressed.

  • Hi,
I too woke up from surgery with numbness in hip groin and half my private area. This all on my L side same as surgery. I also have horrible nerve pain on my R groin, hip, thigh, outer calf, big toe and top of foot. My surgeon asked me what my pain was like and where it was the day after surgery. I am 9 days post op from fusion, rods and screws on L2-3,3-4,4-5. He said the pain I was having can be typical when you had nerve compression and now the pressure is relieved the nerves don't know how to respond. He said it can take up to a year for everything to stabilize. The nerve pain on my R leg and foot is so bad and it is difficult to walk and feel balanced. My leg and foot are so sensitive that clothing or bed sheets that lightly touch send me through the roof! We just have to accept this as part of recovery. Try to be stronger than the pain. If we let the pain take over it wins and we will suffer much longer. The choice is ours. Hugs to you as you go through this recovery.
  • Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I never thought this would ever be like this. I try to be strong but it is soooo hard. I think what bothers me the most is that it's not a 100% guarantee that all the feeling will come back. They say "most likely" that's not enough security for me. I hope everything gets better for you as well. It sounds like you are going through the same thing as I am. Prayers for a speedy recovery!

  • It's funny how one forgets some of the dreadful details. But now I remember it, how I could feel every single weave of the sheet as it moved across my legs and foot - so so sensitive.

    That did pass with time.

I do hope the numbness improves quickly for you both.
