Pain after Microdiscectomy

  • Hello-  I went into the surgery for L5-s1 microdiscectomy really and truly believing the sciatic pain would be resolved. From the moment I woke up, it has been unendurable. They kept me in the hospital 3 days for pain and inflammation management when we'd planned it as outpatient.  Granted, I'm only 4 days post-surgery but the prospect that this may go on for months more? I can't wrap my head around it.  Taking 10 mg Vicodin every 4 hrs and Valium every 8 to theoretically head off pain and muscle spasms. Useless.   I can walk for about 5 minutes, cannot sit at all, and sitting on the toilet is agonizing. My next appt with the Ortho surgeon is the 2-week follow up, with a commitment to return to work in 3 weeks. So I ask,  has anyone else woken up in worse (sciatic) pain than before the procedure and yet experienced marked improvement over 2 weeks? The good news is the surgical site itself ,  where the laminotomy and microdiscectomy occurred, is pretty much painless! Thanks for anything you can share.
  • I'm in a similar boat. My sciatic nerve is super inflamed. It's excruciating to sit on the toilet, so I'm peeing standing up into a disposable cup. My surgery was yesterday and I really hope to feel better soon.  I can't sit or get up from sitting without help.

  • Hello everyone I had my L5/S1 microdiscectomy with laminectomy on 21/9. Right sided sciatic pain in my bum, calf and foot was improving up though not completely gone until today bang it's back again! I'm so depressed. Cannot face this again. Has anyone experienced this? I'm so lost and am in need of some advice. Thanks
