Lost in between the pain

Ok I will try to make long story short. Got referred to pain mgmnt. Primary doc was uncomfortable with dosage I had reached on opiates. Thats umnderstandable. Pain clinic doc took 10 days off my opiates from get go. He said would make it up with methadone. Now I was on oxycodone 30mg 2 every 6 hours.with valium and soma since 2005. I was tolerating life. Now methadone I'm not saying it doesn't work. But pain waking me up. I hurt to walk during day things that were under control. Now I walked into clinic w out appt.because he said if this change didn't work. For me to come in before next montha appt. Now he said thats not what he meant but took me into office anyway. Now he says that he doesn't even want to do the 2 ir tabs every 6 he wants to go to 2 every 8. And he wouldnt fill the rest. And he felt like firing me. Walked me out of office and said that if I was in that much pain to go to ER. And took next patient and left me in hallway. I am scared and at a loss of words. Primary refused to help what do I do. Any suggestions welcome. Sorry long after all.

  • Sounds to me like he was wanting to wean you off the medicine. As for almost firing you and walking you out, I couldn't tell ya. I have always have thought pain docs are little odd though. Mine was going to fire me cause I wore a college team shirt that he didn't like. Then he up and moved out of town without telling any of his patients. I just happen to call his office two days before he closed it to ask for a refill. He gave me one refill and told me to go to my PCP for the rest. Needless to say my PCP isn't going to handle that. I went to two months without any pain meds. Finally I couldn't take it any more. I have a herniated disc that is causing sciatica in my right leg. I called my neurosugeon's office and he prescribed me some pain meds so I could make it to his appt on the 16th of this month. I am going to have another fusion, probably in February. My advice would be to ask your PCP if you could be referred to a different pain doctor. I know some people are against doctor shopping but if don't get along with your doctor then I see nothing wrong with finding a new one. After all you are the one paying their salary. I know if any of my doctor did that to me, I would be pissed off and I wouldn't keep going back. My husband works to hard for the expensive medical insurance that pays them. Feel free to pm me if have any questions. Keep us posted on how things are going. This forum is full of very supportive people that are always willing to help or at least point you in the right direction.

Discectomies 05/08 and 04/11, fusions L4-5 Feb 9,2012 and L3-L4 June 28,2012, Staph infection washout 3/2/2012, Bulged L5-S1. SCS trial on January 17th, 2014, which was a success! Permanent SCS on February 20th.
  • Hi. I know you are in severe pain and with this the doctor reactions. But sometimes they get irritated because due to work pressure and high tension. Just calm yourself and make him understand that you are facing severe pain. If still his reaction persists and you think he can't solve your problem anymore than go for another doctor or specialist.

Sorry that you are struggling. I would say that's a pretty high dose of oxycodone for you to be on and your doctor should not have let you get to that point. he/she should have been looking for a specialist to interfere much sooner before cutting you loose. Sounds like your pain doctor was frustrated because you showed up without an appointment. His first priority should be to those who have an appointment, because it wouldn't be fair to make them wait. Remember his other patients are probably in a lot of pain too. Next time be sure to call ahead that you need an emergency appointment.

What other methods of pain management are you using? You'll need a more well rounded routine of medications than just taking opiates. I take lyrica, neurontin, flexiril, oxymorphone (extended release of oxycodone), and nortriptyline to theoretically put my nerve to sleep. Now I'm not saying I don't live in pain..I do very much so, otherwise I would be out living my life and not here haha. I extensively use a tens unit, icing, walking. Injections never worked for me but they may for you.

Hope you can build a great working relationship with your pain doctor. I love mine. He's going to be a very important person in your life so try and be patient. If he's not the right one, hopefully there is another that you can work with. Good luck!
  • Thank you all for your responses. As far as showing up without appt. He told me he would be in on third andnif his change didn't work to go on in. Which I did. But he said he meant to make an appointment. He wasnt clear the way he said it was I will see you in a month. If doesn't work come in on third. There's the mix up. Anyway I know he's busy wish he had just been. Lear and I would have made a second appointment between my month out one.I have been in pain since 2003. Ive done tens unit. Lumbar epidurals. Trigger point injections. Am on er meds. On muscle relaxers and valiums. He was even hesitant to fill those. Seems lime he has his agenda but I don't like were we are headed. I feel like he says he will tell me what pai. I am in. Not the othrr way around. My doc didn't let it get to that dosage like that. We have tried everything. I just had a n we w mrI and emg done on yesterday. Last one was in 2008 will update you guys on results. I am two weeks out and I'm going to be out of my ir meds. I am stressing so bad. Anxious. Please just need your support. Thanks to all.
