Pain feels like lactic acid??

Hi there

I have multi level DDD and suffer at times with severe muscles spasms. I have been going through the worst flare up I have ever had which has lasted 4 months now (I have been off work), previous to this I have managed my pain enough to keep working and having a fairly normal life.

I can only describe my pain as the feeling that lactic acid is building up in my back, my muscles feel so tight and it's very sore all the time. The GP gave me a cocktail of medication including gabapentin (which I have been on 1800mg for 5 weeks now and not seeing any change), diclofenac and baclofen 30mg. this is along with my other pain medicines.

I am no doctor but I really feel that my pain is more muscular than nerve. Where I have pain in my back, my skin is really hot to touch. Is it possible to have spasm in your back for 4 months which could cause this horrible pain?

Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you

  • Have you had any MRI done to see if it's maybe something more serious ?

    Hi there

Had one done on Saturday so hopefully the results will be through in the next couple of weeks. You have worried me a bit when you say "more serious".

  • I have muscles in my back that have knots as big as golf balls. I was explaining to the pain Dr what I was feeling and told him if he felt my back he could find the knots. He told me I don't have to feel I can see them. I have had PT numerous times and get no real long term relief, have had every injection there is including botox to no avail. I have had deep tissue massages and they can work them down about half way and the next day they are back completely.
Surgeon believes its due to the DDD and herneated/bulging discs and the muscles trying to compensate for the imbalance in my neck.
He said there is no guarantee that they will resolve with surgery as the signals have short circuited and it would take a long time to "rewire" the circuit after neck is stable following surgery. Was hoping to put 3 level fusion off for a few more years, but every day I get a little bit closer to saying "do it now."
