Sorry can't actually help with an answer but I have the same problem. I just wanted to ask which level did you have your op on and do you have to wear a collar? I wasn't allowed to sleep on my side in the hospital but in the confusion of being discharged I forgot to ask about it for when I got home! I can't get comfy on my back neither with or without pillows. I still wake up with numb hands because it feels as if there is strain on my neck however I lie. By the way I had a C5/6 ACDF and have to wear a soft collar 24/7 for 6 weeks.

that were done in the 1990's and early 2000. Procedures were a bit different then. After surgery, I had to wear a hard Philadelphia collar for 7 weeks.24 hours a day. With that collar, I could NOT sleep on my side.

To this day, I prefer sleeping on my side. So as not to aggravate my neck (yes, still after all these years, I need to watch what I am doing) I use a neck pillar. Basically, its a roll, that you put under your neck when you lie down. This way, you can still use a 'flat' pillow and maintain comfort. You never want your neck at more than 30 degrees if possible (note, that is my own opinion, not medical fact)

I have all of these pillows and use them at differnent times:

I have all three of those pillows too Ron, and more besides!
I use the top one to sleep on my side, with a similar one to the bottom pillow that I cuddle and tuck under my chin to stop me lowering my head. I also have a pillow between my knees because I have lumbar problems too.

I also have the middle pillow that I use in various places; sometimes travelling in the car, or plane, sometimes sitting in an armchair to support my head.

I have had an ACDF of C3/4/5 (in one surgery) and a lumbar fusion on L4/5.

I was shown by a physiotherapist, while I was still in hospital, how I could lie on my side. I slept that way from the second night after my neck surgery. The first night I sat propped up because I still had a drain in. They knew I had lumbar problems (woke up from neck fusion tossing about in pain from my lumbar spine!) so perhaps that is why they let me sleep on my side.

Different surgeons have different ideas about if we can sleep on our side or not. Do check with your own surgeon.
I didn't have to wear a collar at all. I didn't have a brace after my lumbar fusion either. Those surgeries were by different surgeons.

You are still a babe in arms when it comes to spinal recovery time .

If after 3 months you still feel like this, then you have a lot to talk about. Right now, just take things easy, one day at a time and do everything that your doctor told you to do and avoid everything the doctor told you not to do

  • with Ron, and was going to say the same thing.

You are a mere baby in recovery terms.

I know that I was very fortunate to be able to lie comfortably and sleep so quickly after my ACDF. I was expecting, from reading other experiences, to have problems finding a comfortable position for a few weeks.
Many people seem to sleep in a recliner or propped up in some way, sometimes for weeks or even longer
    .
Things will get easier, but it will take time. No-one can accurately predict how long, but by following the instructions you have been given, you are not so likely to prelong that time.

I look forward to hearing from you telling us once you can sleep comfortably again. :-)

  • it looks like I have butterfly stiches. crap I was so drug I can't remenber!!! i know have to wear my brace for two weeks. Im still in alot of pain, It's only been a week tomorrow! Hi,
You're welcome to join us February buddies. There aren't that many of us! I had my op on 22nd Feb and still have the steri strips and a dressing over my wound. Consultant did internal dissolvable stitches but I had a mole removed a few months ago and removed the dressing too early causing the wound to reopen, so I'm playing it safe with this one! Don't go back to consultant till 6 weeks post op so will leave dressing till then (Obviously I have supply of fresh dressings for using after showers etc) :)
  • if you weren't told to take the steri strips off at any point, then I think you should leave them alone.
Generally any after care that you need to do will be explained to you. If you don't know, I think they expect you to do nothing! :-)

Don't those first showers feel wonderful?
