Herniated Discs

First time here and posting. I'm about ready to try and find a new doctor for my lower back injury. I was first diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease back in August 2012. After so many pain pills and patches, I finally told my Orthopedic Surgeon I wasn't taking them no more.... He had me do Physical Therapy for 4 weeks, 3 days a week and that did more harm than good. I was then given a TENS unit which helped at first, but now not so much. The pain is non stop and even hydrocodon doesn't touch it at all.. I've also been having very bad burning pain in my lower back and it goes to my right hip. Then I started having numbness to my right leg and foot and it felt like I had pins and needles going up and down it and the fact that it felt like I just took my foot out of a snowbank in my backyard.

He had me on restrictions at work: (from Nov. 2012-March 2013)
No lifting, pulling or pushing over 10 pounds
10 minute breaks to sit every 2 hours
No shifts over 8 hours
Wear a TENS unit at all times at work

Now, I had a MRI cause of things getting worse.... I was up to not sleeping at night or at any point cause of the pain. Had this done and then had my second IME for the Ins. Carrier since this is a Comp Case. It was shown that I have 2 herniated discs with the DDD, pinched nerves and something else he saw but didn't know what it was and would have a radiologist look at it.. He took me out of work for 3 weeks and wanted me to do Lumbar Traction at Therapy to see if that would help.

Now the problems..... I'm still waiting for the first Therapy appointment 2 weeks later cause they were "too busy" to submit the paperwork to the Ins. Carrier and then on the Return To Work paper, he had put on it that I would be going back to work Full Force.. no restrictions... It took 2 weeks for them to fax a correct paper to my job. I then find out he has me being able to lift, push and pull up to 25 pounds... Ummm so what happened to the 10 pounds?

Has anyone else ever have this happen to them? The IME doctor suggested trying a shot in the back and if that one didn't work, then I should see a spine surgeon. I have 1 more appointment with my doctor next month. If he doesn't want to do anything, I'm about ready to find a new doctor. One that doesn't twiddle their thumbs or take up to 2 weeks to submit paperwork...

I should also mention that it's hard to take alot of the pills he wants me too cause I'm being treated for diabetes and the meds raise my sugar level to dangerous levels....

  • I am very sorry that you had been treated like that. It is hard enough for us to deal with this pain crap but then add in all the work that goes along with getting to appointments, paperwork and especially physical therapy. I would certainly find a new doctor. Do you see a pain management doc? I'd find one if you can, the pain place I go to is like a one stop shop, whatever I need because of my back, they help me find. As for your restriction, it totally looks like he just forgot what you originally had set up. I wish you luck finding someone who cares for you as a person, not just the money that comes with you.

I did try a pain management doctor and dropped him like a hot pancake. He had me take Cymbalta during the day and the generic of Elaval at night.. I ended up in the ER from the meds and the doctor's there told me to stop taking them. He said it was all in my head and that I would be on them sooner than later.

I just got a copy of the new Return To Work Paper... This is word for word...
    Alternate Sit/Stand
    No Stoops & Bending
No Lifting More Than 25 Pounds
    (X) May Return To Light Duty On 4/1/13

My husband said "if you can't bend at work, how are you going to use the bathroom??" We had a good laugh at that one. As for the pain.. I guess I'm just living with it.. As for sleeping... I get by with what i can get. I was suppose to see the doctor today but canceled it. It was suppose to be a follow up from that Lumbar Traction.... which PT still hasn't heard anything yet and I go back to work in a week. Right now, I sit for about 15 to 20 minutes then get up and walk around.. Sitting too much brings out the burning pain in the lower back, then it hits the right hip, then travels down the right leg. It does the same thing when I'm working but reversed cause I'm on my feet for 8 hours a day.
