failed spinal fusion

I had a spinal fusion march 2011. The bone grafts didnt take so now i just have the hardware in my spine. My pain is geting worse and im not really sure how to go about finding someone to look at my back and see how muh worse its gotten, and where i should go from there. In 2011 they suggested another surgery but through my stomach this time and said i have a good chance of dying this time. Anyone have any suggestions on what i can do to help the pain or what i should do from here?

  • I currently had fusion last year and after ct scan was told the bone growth is not working. I am currently wearing a device for 30 minutes a day to try and activate bone growth. It is by spine logic and looks like a steering wheel. Just wondering why this was not recommended for you to try and get bone growth. I would seek a second opinion as well from another doc and inquire with current one about this device. No i do not know as of yet if it worked but it was either replace the bone graft or try this i took the later. I still have a few months to use before i will know if it was a success or where i go from here. also i am currently taking 50mg of tramadol that seem to do the trick on the pain.

  • They said you have a good chance of dying, why if you don't mind me asking? I would definitely get a second opinion as to what is going on and what can be done. As to what the previous poster Jiffrey was talking about the device is called a bone growth stimulator (BGS) It helps to promote bone growth for some people,I had one it didn't work for me. I ended up having revision surgery for my non-union and now I can say that I am fused, I'm just not out of the woods yet in regards to on going pain/nerve damage, but hey one step at a time.

I'm well versed in the whole non-union revision stuff so should you have any further questions just pm me I would be happy to help if I can.
  • I had the interior fusion, they fuse you but go in through the front. i had it done seven years ago, surgey went fine and i healed just fine. i dont know why they say u could die but i guess it is a major surgery has the chance for complications. I wouldnt be so scared, do some research, ask some questions.
