Is it possible my staph infection has returned?

I had a staph infection in March of 2012 after a spinal fusion surgery. I was declared infection free in December. Now I have red pus filled bumps popping up on my scar. They hurt quite a bit as does my scar. Could my staph infection be coming back?
Discectomies 05/08 and 04/11, fusions L4-5 Feb 9,2012 and L3-L4 June 28,2012, Staph infection washout 3/2/2012, Bulged L5-S1. SCS trial on January 17th, 2014, which was a success! Permanent SCS on February 20th.

  • I would call the doctor's office ASAP seriously. Clearly no one is there, but they should have an answering service. I think your surgeon or primary care doctor or some doctor needs to know BEFORE Monday... Start calling and see if you can talk to someone tonight.

  • I have had staph infection return.
  • I am going to call the hospital and see who is on call for my NS. I hope they don't think I am crazy. My scar is about 10 inches long and the redness and pimply looking bumps only cover about a one inch spot, but I don't want to take any risks. I don't want to have another surgery to have my hardware removed. The last time I had a staph infection I could barely walk, and I was in the hospital for 8 days. I also had a picc line and had to do home IV antibiotic for six weeks. I don't want to go thru that again. I used a walker for three months. Imagine the looks you get when people see a 33 yr old pushing a walker.

  • LOL, Had to laugh, I'm 33, and I guess technically I was 32 when I was at first in a wheel chair (shoved around Sea World with that one...lol) then on a walker (took a cruise with that walker... fond memories...lol) and then cane (Walmart with a cane...lol... been there done that). You really do get some funny looks, but I also found most people to be very kind and caring. I tell you what was a HORRIBLE mistake, those "ride on carts" at stores, they jerk something fierce.... like how can that be helpful for the convalescent? Someone needs to redesign those things. I hope you were able to get a hold of someone in your practice. Hopefully its just a little skin rash or something but I do think I'd get it checked out ASAP And FYI, I did buy a purple stripped cane, and my walker had sparkly pink tennis balls... I mean, if they are going to look, might as well be "look worthy" right? lol.

I have just read this and have been wondering how you have got on. Did anyone get back to you?

I hope that it will be easily solved. Please do let us know what they tell you.
    Take care

I have a pink walker and a cane with flowers painted on it. I got so many comments on my walker. If I recall right nobody ever asked me why I was using it. The nurse on call for my NS office called me back and told me if I start running a fever to go the ER. She said they will see me on Monday to take a look at it.

  • Glad you were able to get some good medical advice. Hopefully you won't develop a fever and it won't be another infection. Let us know how the Monday appointment goes. Glad you have some stylin' "walk ware"...lol.

  • The doctor took a swab of the goo in scar and sent it for cultures. I have another appointment for a follow up on Friday. I have to start more antibiotics, 2000 mg of cephalexin a day. I don't know what is going happen if it is staph.

  • I hope the culture comes back negative... let us know!
