Facet Joint Block - Please help me decide if I should do it!

Hello! I am 25 and have been burdened by lower back pain for the past 1 1/2 years but it finally got to the point that I couldn't take it anymore. I have been diagnosed with Facet Joint Arthritis, Degenerative Disc Disease, and Spondylosis. I have also been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, strong possibility of other arthritis in other locations currently being determined (most indepth examination and tests being done on hips and Sacroliliac Joint - I also blood tested positive for some spinal disorder? My Rheumatologist is concerned about it but hasn't given a ton of info about it yet), and/or some sort of Auto Immune Disorder. Basically, I'm falling apart at 25! :)

I saw a spinal specialist today and he is recommending a Bilateral Lumbar Facet Joint Block. This will be a series of three appointments, if I go thru with it/respond to it. The first will inject the steroids and numbing agent into each facet joint to numb the nerves to hopefully give me pain relief for 5 to 10 days. If it works, he does it again for good measure, and then the third burns or stuns the nerve to hopefully give at least 6 months to a year of relief, if not longer. From talking with a friend who also has back pain, she doesn't recommend the burning of the nerve. I don't know what to do. I'm scared to get this done, but the pain is very burdensome and I'm having trouble walking. Any suggestions, advice, suggestions, anything? :) Thank you!

  • I'd run ALL of this info by my PCP to be sure the shots wouldn't cause problems with all the other multiple medications/conditions you have. In fact, I'd be certain I had a top notch PCP that I could develop a great relationship with because it sounds like you are going to need someone coordinating all of this. I've had steroid shots, but not in the facet joint. If you have tried everything else *but* this and are miserable then I'd continue with the treatment plan.

    Best of luck to you!
