Hi, I am new today. Was diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis with Myelopathy, there is also a bone spur poking right into the cord, there is also Spondylolisthesis, 2 herniated disc with degeneration. I drive a school bus and love my job, have weakness on my whole entire left side, with no hand grip on the left. My limbs are all numb and heavy feeling all the way to genitals but not including, still have bladder control. Have some balance issues especially on the left side. Have seen my doc, a neurologist, chiropractor, physical therapist, Neuro surgeon, and an Orthopedic Spine Specialist. The NS and Ortho both said only way to fix this progression is ACDF surgery and don't wait. They said they are not going to fix existing problems only stop progression. I am still hoping that I can regain strength enough to go back to work. I am going with the Orthopedic spine specialist because he is at a very well know hospital with top Surgeons.
Have been off since April 4th. Anybody else have these problems and it got better after spinal fusion?

I am not sure about a collar, am seeing my Surgeon Monday for consent and talk with surgeon. Seems to me a collar would be helpful for a while. Have been doing shopping also, got button up PJ's, and some capri yoga type pants with pockets for cell phone. Think Texting will come in handy especially if the voice gets lost. Wonder how you text 911 in case of a fall LOL. There is some posts about Post op must haves, really sounds helpful. What is the date for your surgery? The closer the 17th gets the more terrified I am. Grammaof9 how are you feeling when time gets closer?

  • I live on a farm so had things to do before surgery. Planted a large garden last week, kinda one handed, left hand doesn't grip at all. Challenging at times. Yesterday had to get the chicken barn cleaned out so I don't have to worry about that for a while and also get the young layers out there. Thankfully hubby bought a club car with dump box for my birthday last month, couldn't have done a wheelbarrow. Shoveling was also challenging, but improvising by taking the shovel handle and resting it on my bumb left arm. Hey, it worked. Surgery is only 8 days away so couldn't take anything for pain. I was wondering if there is anything that I could take for pain, does anybody know?

Make sure you get the yoga pants with the front side pockets to keep cell phone in. If we come out of surgery compromised and unable to talk for a while, then texting will be handy for the people wanting to talk on the phone. My husband says that I will find a way to talk though. Had the pre op apt yesterday and the insurance hadn't approved it at that time. It took 2 denials and 3 weeks before our insurance approved just the MRI. Called them sort of expecting a denial for surgery, but guess what they approved it, the doc said there isn't any fight because the only option to correct myelopathy is surgery. It is such a relief to not have to worry about that, but now reality is really starting to set in. I asked a ton of questions, and feel really good with the answers, so feel ready to get this surgery over with and start the healing. They told me the hospital stay would be at least a day and maybe 2, depending on how doing, I am going to be wear a hard and soft collar for 3 months. Are you feeling ready for your surgery Vicki?

I will post as soon as able. My mother has been in hospital 4 times since last Friday, she is 82 and is in assisted living, Monday they finally admitted her, she had a heart attack or stroke. Yesterday she was totally different, upbeat elated mood, joking. She is normally not like that. Today she has paranoia. She wouldn't put on oxygen, which she needs all night long and wouldn't take meds. she thinks they are trying to slip her something. Its terrible. They are wanting to move her to a geriatric phyc place. Her triponen levels are still elevated, which means she still might have another heart attack. I want to postpone surgery, but really need it and don't know when they would schedule again. My sister from Alaska is staying an extra week to help with her and after my surgery help me. Man when it rains it pours

  • I had a 4 level ACDF 2 years ago. I had trouble with my throat - swallowing - you'll want to have stuff around that is thick and smooth. Things that worked for me were mashed potatoes, apple sauce, spaghetti, ice cream, etc. As for talking, you may be hoarse but you should be able to talk.

Sorry about your mother, country girl. You're right about when it rains it pours.
