  • Just wanted to jump in here quick and introduce myself. I'm a fellow CHD sufferer for about 5 yrs now. Also stenosis and arthritis in the neck. I've been basically biting the bullet for several years with the discomfort as it's become a part of life but can no longer ignore the pain which has reached a level 10+ from neck down into the arm for several weeks. My neuro has me on ultram and Zanaflex which do nothing except make me spacey. I start PT tomorrow (again) and am out on sick leave as I can't function at this pain level. I've been following your posts about the surgery and thinking it may be about that time for me. Hope you guys don't mind if I poke my nose in here and there to ask questions. It's comforting to know there's a place I can come to and share and hopefully give something back as well.
Life's a great big canvas. I'm going to throw on all the paint I can.

I was just wondering how your doing over all now. How much better are you doing and keep in mind it will get better yet also.

    Michelle
Where are you? I hope it's going well for you and your just having fun.

This thread has a lot of experience with the few of us on it. I do not think anyone would be upset with you asking anything you need info on. Please ask away. We have all had several surgeries both good and bad.

  • Hi there susabell it's good to hear from you i am doing fine i think. It's a bit of a worry not to have heard from Michele HMmmmm. I hope she is ok! Hi there Rugrat1362 i think you have found the right site with very informative people. Feel free to ask questions. I am ok i still get severe pain down the back of both my arms, for arms & into my hands. my surgeon said it should go in a few months (but i'v heard that after two previous surgery's & it didn't work then so who says it will now. Sorry rick not feeln to positive today i had a very bad night with lots of pain & not much sleep. The makings of a grumpy old manLOL

To hear that you are having this type of pain STILL. I understand your concerns and I must admit I would be a bit annoyed at this moment. Hopefully this will settle down soon. When do you see your surgeon for a follow up???

    Concerned for you,

Keep in mind what all you have been through. This will take time to recover from. You will have ups and downs. Just try to stay positive and look to the future. Also remember that if this surgery does well for the neck but doesn't help for all the pain there are still more things to do for the pain. So if your stuck with nerve damage there are still some things to try on that. Don't give up yet plus your recovery is just starting. The worst thing you can do is do to much when you do feel good. Sit back and take it easy your good time will come in time.
You won't have a real idea of how your going to be for about six months. It's still early.
This takes time, a lot of time.

I am doing pretty good for the damage I have. I have been trying to get a second SCS implanted for a few months now and I am getting real close. I had a trail and the second night I slept for fourteen hours straight with no pain so I know this will help me and allow me to cut down on pain meds too. It's a win win as soon has I can get it.
Just getting my pain management doctor, surgeon and scs rep all on the same page has been a job. I think we are almost ready. Yes another surgery but it should go has a out patient surgery with one or two laminectomys and go home. A few rough days at home and then it just gets better and better. We always have to look to the future the past and present no longer count for much. I hope to get this second unit and start to travel again and do a lot more.

Wish you luck and time will tell what your going to be left with. Just take it easy and do not over do it for awhile.

It does bother me we have not heard from mbrideman. I hope she is ok and off having fun but it seems a little early for that..
Michelle if your out there drop us a note on how you are doing.

  • I don't know why but i expected things to be different this time around. I have been more careful i have rested & done everything i have been told to do & even more importantly wot i was told not to do i have stayed away from with vengeance. I don't get to see my surgeon for another three weeks yet. Hi Rick i understand wot you are saying it's just like i said before i expected to be different this time. Even my surgeon seemed surprised when i told him i still feel pain & that in it self worries the hell out of me. I am trying to stay positive but i think i need something/ anything to change fingers crossed it will happen & soon. It sounds like good news in the future for you Rick i really hope it all goes well for you & you get the second unit & maybe your life back.
If you are out there Michelle drop us a line i myself am getting a little worried we have not heard a thing from you at all. Fingers crossed for improvement for everybody in the near future.

Like Rick said it is so very early on, those nerves are so upset. As per my posterior I just feel achey when it's been a long day or when I'm not sitting with correct posture. I think my surgeon nailed it I needed stabilization. It will be 3 months for me on 11/8. I had to go to ER on 10/31 as my appendix decided it was coming out had surgery on 11/1 at 6:00 am very painful.
They go thru belly button Ouch!!!

Sending All Positive Vibes Your way Bundy!!! Keep doing a little bit at a time, I think you will recover fine, just going to take time.

  • So sorry to have worried you guys :( I have just been busy teaching my online class and trying to keep up with all of that and I don't always think to log in here. I'm doing ok...had a bit of a "melt down" on Friday because I am so frustrated that I can't (or shouldn't) do things that I normally do.
Still no cooking, laundry, pushing, pulling or lifting over 10 lbs. I am allowed to drive short distances. I am one who usually does for everyone else, so these limitations are about to drive me bonkers! :(
My body tells me when I do too much though. I'm sitting with an ice pack between my shoulder blades as I type this.
Again, I am so sorry to have worried you. Oh btw, I found out why bandages have a gauze pad..man that did NOT feel good when they pulled my steri-strips off (I have internal sutures). I go in a couple of weeks to get my xray and see how everything is doing. I actually talked my husband into a weekend cruise to nowhere in mid Nov....just gonna plop my butt in a deck chair and enjoy the salt air of the sea and let someone else do all the cooking and cleaning. Maybe I'll even get lucky and win at Black Jack so I can pay for this surgery...haha!
I promise to try to log in here more often and check in.

Glad to hear your doing ok and even thinking about a weekend cruise.
Yes there are things you can not do now but in the future if everything went well you might be able to do them. Laundry is one of the worst things you can even try to do trust me on that one. Hey don't laugh about maybe getting a cruise paid for in the casino. I did one night.
The last night of a seven day cruise to Mexico and the water was rough. Two thirds of the people all in bed getting sick. I sat down at a empty roulette table with my last twenty dollars cash. Seventeen black three times in a row walked away with almost $1700.00 it does happen.
It is good to hear your doing better. This takes time do not rush it. This can effect the rest of your life.

Sorry your not getting the relief you expected. First off your still early in your recovery.
It may or may not get better but time will tell.Nerves are not very forgiving and yours were messed up for a long time. I still feel safe in saying your situation has time and room for more positive results. It can take months sometimes for small improvements.
Months from now if still no improvement there is still more that can be done. Meds, treatment, PT and or stimulation. You are not stuck with what you have at this time.
After my first cervical surgery the doctor said it would take six months. At less then six months we did a second.cervical surgery. He said over six months recovery because I had not gotten past the first surgery and now was recovering from both of them. And plus my dumb idea I had a lumbar surgery done with the second cervical surgery to save me time. Bad Idea.
It took me a good years to get over the surgeries to see what I was left with.
My cervical" issues and my cervical cord damage are doing good now and my main pain issues are from my lower back and upper back issues now.
Trust me Allen I know how you feel and why your worried. I have been there. Lots and lots of time made a big difference. The one thing I feel helped me the most with my neck was a pool class twice a week. Once I felt better I quit going then after my last lumbar surgery I have stayed in a pool class. Twice a week for over two years now. I look forward to it. Yes it's a pain in the butt but twice a week and I feel so much better. I don't know if you have access to a heated pool or water therapy, just something that might help you. Also ask your doctor if anyone has a IF unit you can try. IF stands for interferential (sp) it's basically a tens unit on steroids it has way more voltage and a faster electrical cycle that can reach down to nerve roots with out bothering the muscles and help block pain. Much like a SCS unit does but is used outside not implanted. Just some ideas to look forward to. Again I hope time will make the biggest difference for you

Keep us up to date. Wish you the best Bud
    Rick
