Recent Cervical Fusions & Extreme Neck/Shoulder Spasms

Just had 2 cervical fusions C5 & C6, C6 & C7 and am having terrible neck spasms & shoulder pain. Was wondering if anyone else out there is experiencing the same thing. Dr. has me on Oxycodone every 4 to 6 hrs. along with Valium every 8 hrs. Had been trying to cut back on Valium do to constipation & stomach upset. Any input or advice from someone experiencing the same thing would be welcomed. Praying those that recently had surgeries are recovering well & finding some relief & comfort from your pain.

  • How long ago was your surgery? I think everyone who has cervical fusions suffers from this for a few reasons...

1.) the position they put your neck in during surgery
2.) your whole spine has been repositioned because of the fusion putting your muscles out of balance.

Maybe your doctor can give you something else instead of the valium? I found muscle relaxers to be very important during this time.

    Praying for you.

Another surgery in the near future. I am 26 years old.

Current Meds- Norco 7.5/325, Cymbalta 60mg, Gabapentin, Adderall 20mg
  • Thanks so much for your response & your prayers. I had my surgery just last Tuesday, Sept 24. I will have to mention the muscle relaxers to my Neuro & see what he says. I know I was on them for quite some time after I had my lumbar fusion 7 years ago.
    Blessings to you =)

  • Anyone else who has had cervical fusions recently still experiencing lots of neck pain along with bad spasms & shoulder blade pain? Quite miserable these days. Trying to fight it off with oxyocdone & valium. Praying this will soon pass.

Unfortunately, it takes a long time to recover from such major surgery. I had the bad shoulder blade pain. My surgeon had told me that the nerves in the neck weren't the only nerves that could get inflammation.
