Back and Leg Pain

Since July of 2011, I've had 2 back surgeries, different doctors in different states. Both surgeries have failed. The first surgery was done because my mri showed a server disc herniation at L5,S1 and I was experiencing extremely painful sciatica. I could barely walk, put on pants, bend over, etc. The neurosurgeon told me that my only option was surgery because the disc was pushing against my spine and pinching the sciatic nerve, he said if not I would've developed cauda equina syndrome. So I had the surgery and almost a year exactly I'm having a second surgery for spinal stenosis and L4,L5,S1 herniations. The doctor only fixed one of the 3 discs and now almost 2 years later I'm still in severe pain daily. Just recently my left leg feels like a burning pins and needles from the top of my hip down to my feet. I have had 6 epidural injections, 6 nerve root block injections, I've been on Percocet since 2011. I am so discouraged about my back and Leg pain I don't even know what to do anymore. Also I've lost 50 pounds so any helpful info would be appreciated.

  • What kind of surgery did you have the first and second time? Was the first surgery a microdiscectomy? And now are you facing a fusion or a laminectomy?
I'm sorry that you are facing undergoing a second surgery, but the stenosis is a different problem than a herniation and it is entirely possible that those different conditions could cause this to happen.

My first surgery was called a laminectomy/discectomy. I had a three inch incision from that one. The neurosurgeon told me he "cleaned" the part of the disc that was herniated but did not remove the disc. My second surgery was also a laminectomy and stenosis surgery to alleviate the narrowing of my spine, I have a 6 inch incision now in the same spot. My doctor and I have not discussed the third surgery possibility yet and I'm not sure what they would suggest. Right now my pain management doctor(who is also an anesthesiologist) is trying the caudal nerve root block injections on me.
