voice damage after neck fusion

My Name is Jeff. I am a 60 year old male in good physical shape, less my neck. I have had three neck surgeries with the first in 2003 which was from the front fusing 5-6-7. The recovery was very smooth. The second was 2012 which was from the back fusing 567 to T1-2. Pretty tough recovery going through the back of my neck. The last fusion happened 4 weeks ago and that was C3-C4 to 56712. My pain has some what moderated but I am still uncomfortable. I would hope it it mainly my age that is slowing down the recovery. This is my real concern. I am a member of an acoustical music group here in San Diego and I sing mid to high harmonies and some lead parts. I have no range at this time. In fact I have difficulty even staying in tune,no control of my voice. I have taken care to warm up and not push to hard but I am getting very worried that this is damage that is not going to heal, as I have seen no improvement up till now. How long does it take for a persons voice to come back? I know that every one is different but is there a base line or average time. Music is my passion and my good close friend. I would welcome any advice that anyone might have. Thank you Jeff

Hi Jeff, Sorry to hear about your complications. Especially being a musician which I am sure is gratifying and a way to escape when what it presently doing is causing you pain. Having all those muscles cut, and nerves pissed off in the process I would think give you issues with your musical abilities. Have you tried any type of soft neck brace for support? There are my types to try and maybe it would give you enough support to at least practice your notes on a daily basis for strengthening. Just a thought. I know after having two level Lumbar fusion, having a soft velcro back brace that I can leave loose or tighten makes a lot of difference when having to do "tasks around the house" or shopping etc. Hope you feel better....And sixty is Not old.
