Is pain under arm common with neck pain

a month ago I woke up with a stiff neck but it was more of a pinch, when I turned my head to the right, or back. I stretched it but it has gotten worse. It hurts behind my shoulder and down my arm but it also hurts in front where my chest meets my arm around the pectoralis muscle. That area is always sore and feels tight, I also have a couple of pin point spots on my back around my scapula and on the outside of my shoulder, my arm hurts but there is no numbness or tingling, just a dull ache

Nights are the worst, it hurts in my chest and then my arm will pull up, my wrist towards my shoulder with my elbow bending and it cramps and spasms. My dr gave me flexerill it did nothing, I can only lay on my back and that still hurts my shoulder and arm. I've tried propping my arm up on a pillow that still doesn't help.

Last night I woke up with my entire right side in spasm down my back, I couldn't stand up straight and my head was turned to the right side. It was excruciating. Has anyone had symptoms like this?

  • welcome to spine health........have you seen your regular doctor for evaluation? if not, it would be a wise first step in finding out what might be causing the neck and muscle issues you are experiencing. here is a link that will help get you started and give you a guideline as to what steps might be involved in getting treatment and a diagnosis....

  • Cervical problems can cause such significant shoulder and arm pain. Shoulder impingement and rotator cuff problems can also cause and/or add to this pain. I would have the shoulder checked/MRI'd . Be careful with any shoulder PT, as aggressive PT can significantly aggravated a cervical problem, if you have a structural not just soft tissue neck problem.
Severe DDD, Severe neural foraminal stenosis at 2 levels, moderate canal stenosis at 2 levels, significantly impaired left shoulder & arm function. Chronic moderate compression fracture at C6.
  • I had a 3 level acdf in Sept 2013. The pain I was in for the 3 years prior was hard to explain. I was in a car accident several years prior. In 2010 I had the trunk of my car fall on my neck. After that I could not run and could barely walk.I didn't have insurance until 2013. So I waited to have the surgery, I wanted an experienced surgeon, instead of an intern.
Now 6 months post op, the pain is radiating between my shoulder blades and down both arms. And this is recent, I already had pain that was different than before the surgery, but this is much worse. I have a referal to a pain clinic, but can't get in until mid April. My gp is prescribing 5 mg hydrocodone twice a day, It doesn't help much. I can't take nsaids because of multiple ulcers. Anyone have any suggestions.
