Lumbar Microdiscetomy & Fusion

Ive had sciatica for as long as I can remember. I've done some PT years ago, been to the chiropractor several times, had pain meds and tried all kinds of rubs and patches in addition to heat, ice and rest and never have gotten many periods of relief before it would flare up again. Then, 3 weeks ago I began having excruciating pain from my butt to my foot. That had me seeking further care from an orthopedic surgeon. After an MRI, I found out I have degenerative disc disease, a large disc herniation, severe stenosis and spondylolisthesis all at the L4 - 5 level. My surgeon recommended spinal fusion. I sought a second opinion and he is recommending just a microdiscectomy and now I'm thoroughly confused.

I'm not even sure what my questions are. I'm just confused and looking for anyone who can give me any advice or their experience with something similar or if anyone can give me advice about only having the dissectomy without the fusion. I just don't know which way to go and need some insight for you "experts".

Thanks!
~Amy
