What to do?!?!?! How to strengthen back?

Hi everyone,
I have a large broad based disc protrusion. L5-s1. Compressing my nerve and I have debilitating sciatic pain. This is my 7th week and I have had no relief whatsoever. I have spent so much money on acupuncture, physio, Chiro and nothing seems to work.
I can't do any of the exercises (Mackenzie etc. ) because they completely aggravate my symptoms
And immediately send shooting pain right down to my foot.

Anyone else in the same position? How long did it take for your leg pain to stop? How can I strengthen my back if I can't do those exercises? I am dying to return to work ( I'm a teacher and it's almost the end of the school year!) and I also have an almost 2 year old at home who I Can't even be left alone with because I can't even pick her up care for her fully. :( it's so

Thanks in advance!

  • I'm sorry to hear about your pain. Have you seen a physiotherapist to see if injections might help you? Many here have had success with their L5-S1 pain with them. If not, I would suggest you try that.

  • Have you tried physical therapy, they should be able to show you some exercises to do that would not aggravate your symptoms. If I were you I would run fast from a chiropractor, especially with a known disc problem. Has surgery been mentioned to you?

Im sorry for you pain. I know it's hard when you can't pick your own lil baby up.

  • I went through my second pregnancy with my L5-S1 sitting on my sciatic nerve. I know how hard it is caring for little ones when you're in so much pain, it's emotionally & physically draining. I'm so sorry. You've received some great advise here. I found that injections, ice & heat, massage & all of those things did help a little. I finally found a physical therapist that studied my MRI & developed a routine of stretches (with heat to relax the muscles) & exercises to strengthen without causing more pain.

I had a very conservative pain management doctor at the time & surgery was never offered as an option. My disc is now black & dead anyway & I find myself praying to the often cruel god of spines that my nerve will heal. Please don't make the same mistake & get some good medical advise as soon as possible. A good question to ask is "How will that get my disc off of my nerve?" when treatments are suggested.

My advise when it comes to chiropractors & damaged disc is RUN (or hobble) away as fast as you can! In my opinion there is nothing that adjustments can do to heal a disc whatever they promise. They don't have the years of education that qualified spine specialists do. They can't diagnose or treat your condition & they can cause a lot more damage. I'm sorry.

  • Hi all,
I was being through sciatica coz of bulged L5S1 disc. Surgeon asked me for physiotherapy and NSAID and muscle relaxant. I tried for 2 months but could only get temporary relieves from PT and medicines. I was very nervous if I would have to go for surgery and if the surgery will leave me workable or not.
I realised that human body heals by itself but how long it takes. All the time just the same thoughts. When I found that allopathy has no medicine for curing and surgeon is only waiting for my yes to surgery. Someone told me that I shld try 4 things.
    1. Anti natural moves. Means walking backward when u r free at home. That gives reverse therapy to your muscles n discs. Following PT moves which are anti to your natural moves. But do not challenge your extreme stretch.
    2. Homeopathic medicines, which claim that they need no surgery for sciatica.
    3. A lot of water intake, even before you feel dehydrated or thirsty. Just before and after each physical activity drink some water.
    4. Stop taking oily and sweet foods, as they increase inflammation in your nerves.

I am feeling very good within 2 weeks of practicing these 4 points. If someone need to know the homeopathic medicine names, I can tell him. May God give all of us a healthy and a happy life.
  • Thank you for your reply. I would be very curious to know the homeopathic remedies you have tried. Interesting it was suggested to walk backwards. I will try that! Just curious who suggested that to you? The surgeon?
My surgeon was not helpful. He said call me if you decide to have surgery.

  • I would suggest maybe you try steroid injections they can be very effective for some. Physio may help relieve some of your pain but id be very careful as it could also irritate your back and make your pain levels worse.
    Have you thought about surgery?
