This is my first post because I didn't know what else to do, so ill keep it short&sweet.
Im 18 and since I was 14 ive had chronic back pain, when I was 14 a doctor told me I would be in a wheelchair by the time I was 21 without diagnosing me with anything. For years I have battled for a diagnosis with the NHS and last week was diagnosed with Scoliosis. Im happy to be diagnosed but now im at a dead end. Im constantly in pain, for at-least one day a week I cant walk and maybe the worst of all I cant take part in any college activities like days out and group activities because either im not aloud for health and safety reasons or because im in too much pain. Ive become isolated and lonely and constantly in pain. The doctors give me co-codomol and it makes me feel drunk all day.
I need a back brace but I cant afford one, and I dont know if the NHS could get me one but I dont know what else to do.
I'd appreciate any reply's, thankyou

  • Have you ever seen any spine specialists or was it just a GP who said that to you? Have you had any diagnostic tests X-rays, MRI's etc? Scoliosis is a description, you have a curve in your spine. Did they measure the curve & tell you a degree? Did they tell you what kind of scoliosis you have?

Sorry for all the questions. We are not supposed to critize doctors here & I'm trying really hard not to!!

To my knowledge scoliosis does not necessarily cause pain. It should be measured & monitored to check there's not a progression. What kind of doctor diagnosed the scoliosis, was it just a GP? Did he tell you that you needed the back brace & is he ordering one for you?

Do you have someone (Mum or Dad) who can come to your next appointment & advocate for you? You need some diagnostic tests to find the source of your crippling pain, just scoliosis is not an answer. I'm so sorry you're going through all this without any explanation or answers. You should not be suffering like this!

When you say you can't walk at times is this because of numbness, shooting pain down your leg/legs? Where is your constant pain? Do you have any bladder problems or numbness?

Are you living away at school? Maybe your parents could take you to their doctor. Hopefully you've looked at the information on this site & realize that there is a lot that can be done to diagnose & treat your pain. Please don't accept "You'll be in a wheelchair by 21 here's some pain meds" as an answer, that's rediculous!!
