Physical therapy for an extruded disk??

I have a question about having physical therapy for a extruded disc at C5 and C6. A piece has already had already broken away from the main part of the disc and is resting in the nerves causing pain down both arms. I havent heard from the Neurosurgeon about what the plan of action is but physical therapy is probably one of the few things I havent tried in my 2 yrs of pain. I honestly dont know how PT would help until the disc is taken care of and relief in my nerves. The pain started in my right side a couple of months ago and has moved to my left side also and I am having pain down to my shoulder blade area. The travel of pain has only taken about a week. I still stretch and exercise through the pain. It seems like my Chiro is doing more adjustments to make up for the issue than ever. He pretty much told me yesterday that he is doing what he can to keep me comfortable as possible until the issue is fixed.
So the question is, how will physical therapy help this disc issue and is that a mandatory part of getting things fixed?
