Spinal Fusion

I have just had a spinal fusion and on the post-op radiograph it looks like only one side of the spine has been fused is that normal.

  • When was your surgery? It can take three to six months to fuse.

  • radiographic changes in some people I am sure your consultant will keep you informed .with any fusion time is the main thing .it wont happen overnight your fusion was done to stabilise your spine and that take time so just hang on in there it would be unusual for only one side to fuse

For my lumbar fusion, the surgeon placed a Caliber fusion cage from the left. The bulk of the device is on the left, but its "business end" is in the center.

As for a timeline, the ghostly beginnings of bone growth were invisible to me at six months, but my surgeon assured me that the faint smudge was new bone forming inside the cage. Even at 12 months, the former disc space is still not filled up with bone but he was quite happy with the progress even if it still looks like nothing's happening to my untrained eyes.
