The nuclear option

Without going into endless details, my Mum had had a series of spinal surgery operations over the past couple of years and seems to be in as bad a state now or possibly worse.
She is 72 and the surgeon has told her that her spine is unstable and proposed what I have described as the nuclear option which seems to involve replacing every disc in her back.
I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of this type of surgery or any advice which might help her to decide.
Many thanks,
