  • I have had back problems since 14 years of age when I fell off a roof.
I couldn't walk properly for 6month when that initially happened
I was just told to have physiotherapy in order to fix the problem, I had physio for around 7/8 months with no effect. Then I was told it would recover on its own in time. It didn't, so I just had to adjust my lifestyle to suit and my body adjusted to the constant pain until it got to a stage where I wouldn't notice the pain until I got home every day. I managed to get into the army at 20 as a para even with my back, but was medically discharged due to an injury to my leg and wrong diagnosis.
I'm now 25 and the back problems have been quite severe for about a year now again. It got to a stage where I eventually had to go on the sick from my current job as a maintenance technician, about a month ago. This is Because I'm falling down with leg failure and serous back problems so I'm a bit of a risk to a workplace incident in my current state.
I feel like I've never been fully and properly diagnosed.
Again I've been to the doctors 4 times while I've been on the sick. They just say it's sciatica, which is probably partly it. And give me painkillers for it, but it's just not improving, they are suggesting physiotherapy again which will most likely do nothing until I have to just stop it because I'm getting no progress again.
Can anyone help with this situation.
Surely back problems for 11 years can't just be sciatica.
I feel like I'm judged as a liar and due to this never given correct diagnosis.
Doctors seem to look at me in a certain way, I think due to the way I dress or look unfortunately. Every time I go. They try to imply that this sort of thing is related to drug use. I've never touched a drug in my life.
I just want help because I have a little boy to provide for and I'm afraid I will end up jobless because of my current state.
Sorry for life story but I feel it all adds up together.

You mentioned seeing doctors, but may I ask what kind of doctors?

In my experience, sometimes we may mistake a "look" from doctor to what we are feeling, but instead he may be thinking...and reaching for information that may be outside his box of knowledge. Just a thought.....
But all doctors are not created equally.

I would try to calmly just continue to restate your symptoms, the history and as they occur, until someone listens.

I had years of symptoms with out diagnosis...without meds.
For two years my primary did treat me with pain meds...but with no relief to me..after two years she referred me to pain management doctor.
That was best thing for me!

I had previous MRI and X-ray, and I brought CDs and their written impressions, to first appointment.
My PM doctor always looks at CD himself, not only reading written impressions.
He has repeated explained to me his finding of something not noted..and something noted that was not there.

Ex...my other issues, besides spine, that I was enduring for years without diagnosis...PM doctor reviewed CD from my most recent visit to ER....in 2011.
I was already under PM, also neurologist, care.
ER discharged me with diagnosis of anxiety.

My PM Doctor reviewed the CD and noted recent stroke activity with evidence of previous strokes.
He said, "riddled with evidence of stroke activity".

Re my spine...my PM doctor did variety of other testing on me.
Immediately began with meds and treatments to relieve my pain...and to keep me out of ER.
That a big goal for me!
And he continues to monitor my pain, newer symptoms...and my spine.

And by relieving my pain, I do not mean it is completely gone.
But the edge is off..and my life more tolerable.

I believe in specialists as no one doctor can know everything about everything.
I'm grateful my primary referred me to PM.

I was in so much pain, that thought never entered my mind...the pain changed me..my feeling, thoughts and behaviors.
    I was a puddle.

Your case is very severe (like mine)...and I believe you have no chance of recovery without surgery.
I have the same bladder control problem as you and that indicates a very severe condition...
My surgery is scheduled within 3 weeks.....L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-S1 laminectomies....and an L4-L5 fusion due to a severe unilateral L4-L5 sublexation.

Hi All, I've been reading the posts here for quite a while and decided to post about my condition too.

I was getting alot of discomfort on my lower back and lower leg about 7 months back went to the doc and he told me most probably it would just be muscle ache but the pain didn't go off. So about a month later I went to see a specialist at the hospital and took a mri scan. It showed that I've a slipped disc at L3/L4 region and a pretty bad herniated disc. But since it didn't affect my bowels hence I wouldn't need a surgery. I went for several months of physiotherapy also. I even took 3 months off work. Though the pain had subsided quite abit now, but I still feel pain especially when I sneeze or cough.

Had been feeling terribly depressed eversince I was unwell. I'm 30 years old and overweight. I understand the recover process can take up to 2 years by its own. Can anyone tell me how long does it takes so that it wouldn't hurt so badly when I sneeze? :(

I used to cycle and go for marathons once in awhile but I can't even jog now not even walk more than 20-30 mins.

I love travelling alot also but I don't think I can now or in the near future anymore?

Would like to hear from you guys! Thank you!

Posts: 1 12/13/2014 - 4:31 PM Hello All! Thank you all for your posts. I am a
relatively healthy 34 yo (regular sport climber and yogi) who just had my
second bulging-disc episode, which has laid me up for the last week. Although
it has been incredibly painful and difficult, I have had renewed hope after
reading the various posts here. In early November, I began using a 9mm lift in
my left shoe again. It had been several years (at least 10) since my chiro
diagnosed a leg length discrepancy (he never said whether it was functional or
structural, a red flag I should have noticed .....................  etc.

    I had a
    close Case like yours:

    1. I had discovered that
I have a disc protrusion in Jan 2015 (as I was playing squat with heavy weight
and it was my fist time to work out since long time). The Dr recommended
performing MRI and it showed L4/5 Central Posterior disc protrusion.

    2. So I quit the gym felt
better and started to work out in May. At the beginning of June I had another
injury (I was injured playing biceps by sliding to the sides with heavy weight.
I finished the work out normally but after getting back to my house I started to
lean sided to the left heavily). Here a second MRI was recommended but it
showed no changes to the disc protrusion.

    3. It was advised to take
a vacation for two weeks and the case got better from sever sided lean to
normal. But since two weeks I felt a pain in my knees si I went to a
chiropractor and advised to perform X ray to diagnose an uneven shoulders
and a slight hip rotation detected resulting in a
    very mild functional scoliosis.

    4. I went to a famous
orthopedic surgeon in Egypt. His diagnose was I don’t have scoliosis I have a
muscle spasm tightness in the muscle that is pushing the Hip up and lowering
my right shoulder. And he recommended physiotherapy, massages, water
    treatment.

    5. I went for another Orthopedic
and he confirmed that lumbar vertebrae is a slight disc protrusion and
properly aligned and you just have tightness in muscles affecting your balance
    and recommended me with physiotherapy.

    6. Just two weeks ago, I went
for a third consultation because I got another sided lean to the left again but
it resolved in few days so after its resolve I have been diagnosed that I was
about to have a disc Bulge but it didn’t happen all what I need is a physiotherapy
and pain killer. And regarding the symmetrical deficiency. The Ortheopedic
confirmed it is from the muscle spasm created imbalance and should be resolved
    after treating the root cause

What I feel is still I feel I have uneven shoulders and
uneven hips with a slight rotation of my right hip to the front (left hip is
higher than the right one), right knee is too sided to the outer side than the
left one. A slide forward in the right leg. with a pain at my lower right back
    and the higher left back

    Anyway,
I am concentrating on the Physical therapy and more importantly the home work
out given by the doctor to strengthen the back area and it decrease the pain
level and sometimes I got the feeling that I am symmetrically aligned. May in 6
months of working out and do such excercises the situation get better.

    I am
still 28 years Old and this is my case and I don’t know if there would be
    better Option for treatment.

Note:- From my point of view, Psychologically and to be stress relived (Yoga Manage it ) and with an inner belief that you
will treat your self  is the core for treatment.

  • I am so glad to have found this online. I have a herniated disc which is a result of an air condition unit collapsing on me and hitting me straight on my head. The herniation caused severe inflammation as well. The incident happened almost 2 years ago and i'm still dealing with this. I underwent the injection therapy last year too. Depression is the killer. Sometimes I can deal with the pain but the depression is what takes away the life in me. I used to be so fit; I was a national swimmer, slim, energetic and.... happy. I miss everything about me now. I just wish I would get better soon. I'm seeing the best doctor in Asia (I'm a Sri Lankan) and he says that physiotherapy is the most important for healing. So I'm on it 2 to 3 times a day. I also follow ice therapy which has helped a lot. And of course the medication. Hoping this site will help me more.
