how can disc bulge after fusion?

I just had my one year CT scan to see if I have fused at L4/5 - L5/S1 and to see why I have continued pain.
CT also says I have moderate disc bulges at L3/4, L4-5 and L5/S1 with stenosis at L3/4
(no surgery/fusion at L3/4). My question is how is it possible to have a bulged discs where
I am supposedly been fused? I'm confused!!!!

  • In some cases, the entire disc is not removed, just the portion that is needed to insert the cage and graft....so the disc can bulge again, in some cases.
Your surgeon should be able to explain this to you , as to the specifics of the surgery in your case and why the disc bulged again.
