I am new on this site. I will be getting a L5S1 fusion and also he will be opening the area where my nerves are.
I am 24 healthy. Very active well.... Was... I work in a iron foundry I spent 6 days a week 40-70 hours weekly lefting fittings
From the floor to a Machine. Then back in a pot on the floor. Big fittings. After doing so for about 2 months straight of this. I started
Getting major mind grains. Always went to a specialist for my head. After still nothing. I noticed when I did nothing all day but watched tv. I didn't have any mind grains but my lower back was hurting and my legs had a little numbness too them. First MRI I don't know the medical saying of it but i had a minor bulge at L4-L5 and L5-S1. Well went to a neosurgeron and he sent me to pain management that then sent me to get two shots in my back. Shots in L4-L5. Anyways back to work a couple months later. Throwing iron from the front of me to a pot behind me the piece of iron I started throwing caught on another iron piece as I started my twist throw. It felt like someone stab me with a knife on my right side of my lower back. Now I have major pain lower back and numbness and pain!!! In my legs mostly just down the back side of my legs more right then left. That goes to my feet. And now I can't keep my feet warm. If I sit weird I get like a 9v sitting your tongue jolt from lower right side to my butt.. MRI report said I had minor L4-L5 bulge and a bugle L5-S1 more to the right side back.

I am 24 I didn't want a fusion. Went to pain management for shots again why not right worked last time. She told me like this. You had a flat tire and you fixed it then you had a blowout of that tire. We can do shots but your just covering up the problem. Aka problems down the road. So like a month went by after that of me not sure what I wanted. Then my legs started to get worst. I mean some legs my legs hurt so bad I had to keep them moving. I wanted to cut them off. Hot bath helped very little. only when resting. After walking alot during the day.

So neosurgeron I went. I told him I can't do this anymore lets do the opening of the nerve ports. And ill get shots again and he told me ok will let me look at your MRI. He said in order to do that surgery I will need to remove more the 50% of the disc. So a L5-S1 fusion needs done. So that answered what way everything is going to go.

Jan. 8th I go to get it done. I would like to hear what others thing of my problem and if I am really doing the best thing. Make sure I didn't miss anything.

Sorry for longest. Or bad spelling. Or rules. I'm new tonight and starting typing. I can't sleep mind is racing

Get another opinion from another surgeon.
I know how hard that would be in this much pain to do but if you need it for your mind then it's worth it.
What you said makes sense from the surgeon you have seen. They have too much disk to remove so they're fusing the 2 levels... Ask them if you could have just a microdiscectomy and what the repercussions would be for you. Bottom line is those discs touch your nerve roots and affect your legs if they are pinched. Discs don't just go back in if they have torn.
I'm sorry you have this pain. I've had it too. My foot also felt like ice too. It's weird. Definitely get a heat pack t stay comfortable and ask some more questions until you are comfortable with what the surgeon (s) say.

  • a second opinion would be a good idea. if you're not sure ask lots of questions. why fuse right away? would be my first question...like the other poster said why not a discectomy and laminectomy first? this is where they remove the disc material and remove part of the vertebra called the lamina to free up the nerve. I know that leg and foot pain well. a fusion is a 50/50 shot from what i'm told mine was 2 levels so on that note one levels do much better. I just don't get why a fusion for what must be a big bulge. anyway just my 2 cents. good luck

I was told over 40 years ago I HAD to have a fusion at L3 to L4. I never did. I went on to win a few surfing competition, raced and rode motorcycles all over the world and lived a pretty wonderful & amazing life. EXCEPT when those attack would come. 2 to 6 weeks almost completely in bed until I could gradually do very slight and VERY minor stretching exercises. I mean GENTLE in all caps. Never let it hurt me till eventually I would pull out of it and then go beck to tearin it up. I somehow made it all these years then had the first set of fusions with laminectomies with hardware. At C5 to C6 and 6 weeks later at L3 to L4. He botched that one and I immediately lost a large amount of use in my left leg. He REALLY messed me up 6 years or so ago now.

My case is not usual since 9 months ago I was convinced by an ortho surgeon I trust 100% to allow him to use a Mazor Robot to go in and remove the prior botched L3/L4 fusion. But here is the deal and one YOU need to be aware of. ANY fusion that get done, then produces a ton of stress on both the discs above AND below so you can expect even more fusions down the road. As a result, that first fusion basically wiped out ALL the surrounding discs. So all at once he took out that old L3/L4 and fused me all the way from L3 to S1 and now I am a Titanium man. But my nightmares I currently have are due to a massive tumor he discovered in my spine when he opened me up. What REALLY pisses me off is the first surgeon knew about it but said nothing because he was a lazy and non caring jerk. That's another story. Bottom line is I wish I could say that surgery helps. For me, it led to the complete & utter deterioration of the entire spine. Once you have ONE, more will be following for sure. If you find any way in this world, do not have surgery would be my non professional opinion. But I am NOT a doctor so do NOT listen to me...I am just the victim of a horrible doctor, a renown neurosurgeon every one said was the "best".

I tried a Teeter Inversion table and sold it a month later. It tore me UP! I then bought a weird contraption called the Back Bubble. Do a Google search and see if he is still around. I swear it was an honest miracle for me. The most amazing thing ever was the relief was the very MINUTE I climbed into the thing! If it were not for the tumor that literally FORCED me to have an entirely new & fused spine I never would have sold it. It could have kept me from ever needing a back surgery for life. But it was too late since now I can't do anything that risks ripping apart my new erector set back:-) I wish I knew what was best for you, I just do not know. I do know 100% that any back surgery is the last thing I would ever do. If I had only known it was a tumor in there that had wrapped itself around the base of my spine causing paralysis, I would NEVER have let them touch me fusion wise. But a bad surgeon who has authorization for a fusion is apparently NEVER going to stop, remove the actual problem (the tumor) and then see how you feel. No profit there right...The minute the tumor was gone I had use of my left leg back after 5 years of it being dead. My foot drop went away in the following past 9 months as well. Maybe the most galling part of it all is the dozen or so MRI & CT scans with over 200 X -Rays in the past 36 months and NOBODY can see a tumor bigger than a large grapefruit right at the surgical site? Gimmie a break!

Try everything you can to avoid any fusions etc. But you pain is a pain I know too well. I wish you all the very best,
    Mike
