Thoracic fusion T9, T10 T11 - surgery April 14. 2015

Hi my name is Marika T. and I just read lots of posts. I have symptoms in my legs ,knees and around my ribs/ upper abdomen, the burning, the feeling you become paralyzed. I don't drive I have a stick, no way lol. The burning feels like hot lava running inside my legs, my knees down my feet. I cant move my feet the same way, one is better than the other. I have to use a cane or walker, even better, cause I also have bad balance. When I go down to pick up something, I cant get up cause my legs are so weak. So I use my reacher. I have all those gadgets cause I just had both of my hips replaced.
I just saw a second surgeon, a female, never had a lady doc lol. She looked at my MRI's and told me that my lumbar has shifted, but that my thoracic looks really bad and that the T11 and T12 are poking into the cord. She said the burning in my mid section radiating into my abdomen under my ribs (right) and the horrific burning in my legs sounds all coming from my thoracic, even though my lumbar is messed up too. And she cannot risk doing a lumbar fusion first, cause if they move me the wrong way and my thoracic discs move a little more into the cord I'll be paralyzed. This totally scared me and made me so made, cause the other surgeon was going to do a 360 lumbar fusion and didn't even address my thoracic. He just said, that is a real rare situation and doesn't happen a lot, but may be the lumbar fusion will help some with your thoracic issues.
I have been in the ER 3 times telling them about my mid pain, the fire and excruciating pain under my rib cages, but oh well.
So I am having a thoracic fusion next monday the 14. of april., 2015. She is going in from the back - posterior - and the side through the ribs, she will have to cut some of my rib off. yeah I know sooooo scary, but I cannot take this pain anymore. I fell in the kitchen 3 days ago, how terrifying I could have done a lot of damage and ....... I don't even want to say it out loud.
I admit I am very scared, BUT I am trying to stay positive. I had 3 neck surgeries, 1 lumbar hernia surgery and both hips replaced, oh hand surgery too. 6 surgeries from January 31. til April 2014.
It scares me a lot cs I don't have support in my family Sad my side of family is all in Germany. So I feel all alone in this. My house has 14 steps, 8 to get outside through the front. Ohhh well.
Don't let anybody say your leg pain can only be from your lower back. You have to find the right doctor. I live in Columbia Missouri and my lady doctor is really young from Canada, she has not even worked there long, but she is already a assistant professor, may be that doesn't even mean anything, but she was highly recommended by my hip surgeon who did one of my hips - anterior from the front absolutely GREAT!!!!!! the other one from the back NOT so good at all and a horrible doctor!!
Ohhh I have been in and on my bed since February 20th. I had 4 ESI epidural spinal injections NOT!!!!!!! good, no relief.
If you have any questions, write me. There sure is hardly any info on thoracic fusions. No info from real people at least.
Kind regards Marika
and hope you find someone to help you soon!!!!!

Hi. I was wondering how you're doing after surgery.   Alot of your symptoms are the same as mine.  But the Dr insist it's from the lumbar spine but I feel like it's from my thoracic spine. I hope you have relief.

  • I too have her symptoms. I have numbness/burning/tingling that won't stop with heavy legs
  • Hello. How are you doing after the surgery? I'm having a fusion done T7-T11 in a month and was curious as to how it went, my surgeon is going in posterior as well.
