feel square metal plate post op

I am six months post op and for about a month ago when I started trying more PT exercises such as the lunge prescribed by my PT, I started having discomfort lower back. I had L3-L4, PLIF. The discomfort feels like a square metal plate there and when I stand I feel it much more. In the pool, started swimming, all parts of body loosen up except I feel the square metal plate.
Just wondering if anyone have this similar experience??
My PT said are the scar tissues and try to stretch more. Any opinion/suggestions??
