Disc Protrusion Surgery, anyone?

I thought I'd ask if anyone has had surgery for a (contained) protruding disc? I have a disc protrusion at L5-S1, with annular tear, that is jutting up against the nerve roots. The sciatica is a beast, but I'm trying to manage it with Lyrica and Ultram.

I haven't really heard of someone getting a discectomy for a contained herniation, and I thought decompression (like laminectomy) was usually reserved for stenosis. Anyway, just wanted to hear some personal experiences with contained herniations. Thanks.
