My SI Fusion, SI Bone iFuse Implants

Paul here...

Well, three days till surgery to have my right side SI fused using the SI Bone iFuse implants. I plan to use this thread to pass on information on my specific surgery and progress to hopefully help others. If this is in the wrong arena, moderators, please help by moving me where I should be. I tried searches, and think this may be as good as any for it.

Surgery is first case on Wednesday, 26 Aug 2015 here in Dayton Ohio.

Guess it's time to resurrect this thread.

Hello all. My name is Paul, I am 46 and have been dealing with back pain since age 14 when I broke T6, T7 and T8 in a ATV accident. More recently, I have again broken my lower back in the Middle East (Military, now retired) and even more recently, have had treatment for LBP for the last 7 years. About 5 years ago I was diagnosed with defiantly Rt side SI dysfunction and most likely Lt sided as well. I have Degenerative Disk Disease (DDD) L4/L5 and L5/S1 and a central Herniation on the left at L4/L5 as well.

The list of doctors I have is of course Primary Care, Orthopeadic Surgery, Interventional Spine and Pain Specialist (MD), and Neurosurgery related to my back.

I have had, mult MRIs, LSpine XRays of every type, Facet Injections at L4, L5 multiple times bilaterally, epidural x4 for LBP, SI bilaterally x5 or 6, other injections for purely diagnostic purposes and most recently Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) x2 times at right sided L4, L5. Everything above has been over the last 5 years or do but I have worsened in the last 6 months to a year.

My currently medications are: Zantac, Allegra, Nexium, Zantac, Celebrex, OxyCodone BID, Norco in between the Oxy twice a day. I have been through just about everything else non narcotic, synthetic narcotic and narcotic that is considered a "smaller gun" for pain relief.

Treatments include: Physical Therepy, Meditation, Ultrasound, Traction, Acupuncture, steroid injects as stated above all over my lower back and RFA.

I have a fantastic Spine and Pain Specialist, my third NeuroSurgeon after referral from my PCM who after recent Rt sided SI injection has determined I am a good candidate (and he is one of two trained in the state) for a Rt SI Fusion (iFuse Implants) and possibly Lt at a later date. I am scheduled for surgery on August 25, 2015.

No previous spinal surgeries, but may need a AxiLIF in the future as well.

My wife and two kids have been pretty understanding, but I that I get a lot of grief from my wife for always being in bed and missing so much work. I have missed over 200 hours of work in the last year and have not been able to make it through a full day of work in the last 6 months. I do a benign low effort or impact task that takes frequent breaks to either medicate, lie down or both only to be down for the night or even days. I have found that I have highs and lows, mood swings with the pain, and I am sure I am medication dependent at this point. I know why my wife is frustrated but I feel like she is less understanding/apathetic than she should be at this point. I even find myself dealing with periods of textbook depression. This pain and condition is not just my problem now, but has become my families and even my colleagues at work.

I am on my 5th high end orthopedic bed (the latest is a godsend) and even have a high end orthotic spinal alignment chair at my desk.

I am finding that with my upcoming surgery I am pretty nervous. I work in the teaching arena since all this started, going on 5 years.

I am hoping to make connections with those who have gone through similar procedures and surgeries to help ease my tensions. I am to happy to help others who have questions about my own experiences from a patients perspective.
