L5 discectomy

I'm almost certain I will be getting a discectomy at L5 in the near future. I have 50% loss of motor function in my right glutes. I do not have severe nerve pain from the compression. It's the weakness and the lower back muscles being in constant spasm that is the worst. Those who had the surgery, did the back muscle spasms eventually resolve itself? I'm just trying to figure out why the back muscles just won't let go! Thanks!
