Having to remove the Harrington rods 12 hours after placing them because I was not able to move my

I was the born with scoliosis had the s curve 65 and 40 degree so I tried wearing the brace well at 12 I had my surgery was in the or 20+hours while the rods were placed . Going in to surgery was the last thing I remember . I was in a coma for 3 weeks. After the first surgery  I was told the doctors had discorved that I had no feeling in my lower legs so immediately I was back in surgery for an additional 18 hours while the undone every thing only 12 hours earlier . They were paralyzingly my legs . They didn't think I was gonna wake up . Well I did and instead of wearing the plastic brace after surgery because all that was left was the bone they had fused they put me in a body cast from my neck all the way to my hips and for the next 3 months I remained at the hospital I was completely bed ridden for 2/3ds of that time I was completely dependent on others mainly my mother who never left my bedside the whole time . One day I begged my mother to let help me stand and as I started to stand I immediately hit the floor . I had to learn to walk all over again and after I came home I couldnt go to school I never got to see the 9 th grade and I was in that cast for 1 year. But the doctors were hoping that the bone would be strong enough to keep my spine as straight as possible. A year later they took it off I was 4 inches taller and for the next 10years or so it did but now I'm 48 and the curve  worse than the first . And after the ordeal of what had happened no doctor wanted to risk any other procedure . This was 1984 and I had celebrated my 12 th birthday with a surgery that almost took my life . So pain medicine is the only choice I have and the pain is a still there every day in some degree. Please if any one has seen or heard or even happened to them tell me your story . Cause I've never heard of this happening and the doctors can't explain what happened!

  • Hi Shawn928
I do not have your condition but wanted to say hello and say you are amazing to have coped with so much. What a nightmare that must have been for you and your Mum (and other family of course).

I have had 2 surgeries so far, minor in comparison to yours. I have just been put on a waiting list, for double lumbar fusion, with a new surgeon who specialises in conditions like yours. You may like to try researching about what he has done and what he has designed/patented for use in his surgeries. I don't know if you have heard of The Mehdian Pedicle System, but if you search Mehdian Spinal Instrumentation you will be able to see his work and maybe even be able to link to patients who have have similar surgery to yourself. I hope this information reaches you as I feel it is for research purposes and not recommendation of a surgeon etc. Clearly you are not going to travel to the UK for treatment so I hope the moderators will accept this post for entry :-) Fingers crossed.

Best wishes for your future management of your condition and hope your have good pain meds to help you.

I am living this nightmare, I had t-1 to T-9 fixed with rods and wires . 3 days after surgery I was walking. Then I went to rehab, during this time my legs started tingling. First I lost function of my right leg then the left.. I had a nerve conduction test , On my legs, I felt nothing no electricity shock no needles nothing. But when they check for reflexes in my legs. The doctors still can't tell me why I have no feeling or why I can't walk. To young to be in this nursing home . So we are kind of similar. Any ideas?

Omg, I can't imagine what you must be going through, Floridagal01. And Shawn928, you've been through so much as well. I'm having a final consult with my neurosurgeon on 11/14/16 and I'm scared to death after reading so many horror stories on here.

Hello! I go to see my Neurosurgeon tomorrow morning for my final consult before surgery. I'm really nervous. I'm so afraid I will have more pain afterwards and I'm worried about all the failed fusions that I've read about.
