Severe Leg Pain After Laminectomy

As some of you already know, I had a Laminectomy on Thursday. When I was in the hospital I only really noticed that I was in severe pain at the incision site and in the bottom of my back. When I got home I started having leg pain that's been worse than before surgery. It's a sharp/electric pain that starts in my hip or upper butt area and goes to the back of my knee. It's a severe pain that's worse than my back. It seems to be getting worse, not better. I've walked around the house some but nothing more than that since I've been home. Is this normal or should I be concerned. I thought I'd wake up from surgery and have some incision pain and the rest would be gone but it's actually feeling worse. Any ideas?

  • the same pain but my surgery failed. You have just had surgery though and you will experience things that will go away. The nerves are pretty upset right now and they will let you know it. I do know that it is not a disc if it stops at the knee. Since surgery I have had it from the back to hip and down front of thigh to knee. It will get better for you. Just try and be patient and follow docs orders. Good luck.
  • It's most severe from my hip to the back of my knee but it goes down the back of my calf. It's actually the exact same places I had the leg pain before surgery but just 100 times stronger. It's severe while I'm laying down and when I stand up. I'm taking 4 x 150mg of Lyrica and it doesn't seem to be helping at all.

  • After my surgery (laminectomy and fusion)my legs hurt so bad. Eventually the pain in my left leg went away but the pain in my right leg stuck around and has gotten so much better but I still feel it when I do too much. I will start PT soon and that should lesson it. My surgeon said that he had to do alot of muscle and nerve repair from all the damage caused. Because of this now the muscle and nerves need to heal. I could not lay down on my side for the first 3 weeks so I layed in my recliner with a pillow under my knees and one on each side. I also bought those heat strips for muscle pain and had them on my buttocks ( the big muscle) and leg constantly. It felt so good. They last 6-8 hours.
Its hard to listen to someone say be patient, you will feel better soon. I cried out to GOD so many times while in that pain. WHY ME! What did I do to deserve this. But now I am so happy that I had the surgery and am just waiting for the healing to complete
  • I have the same problem, I had the surgery almost 3 weeks ago and the pain to my hip and butt and leg on the left side is driving me crazy.. I was thinking it was because it was too sudden after the surgery ,but it is getting worst and it sucks... my doc wants another MRI to check and see if there are any other problems.. but for me definitely no more surgeries.. no way.. but my question is does anybody know how long the residual after surgery pain should last and why is it getting worst day by day? please does anybody have an idea?
  • I had laminectomy, disectomy L4L5 came home same day was sore where incision a bit difficulty getting up and down for two days then on second day home was lowering myself down on toilet and something snapped or popped in left hip. Major spasms started at butt all way down to ankle. Thought ankle was going to break the spasms were so severe. Ended up on floor and couldn't get up had to go by ambulance to hospital. After my doctor literally yelling at me for an hour saying you just need to get up and when I could not even move my leg without screaming begging him to admit me he finally did but insisted that the surgery went fine I just needed to walk. After firing my doctor for not treating me at all except with pain meds I got a new doc that put me on lyrica 800 Motrin and Valium 6 days in hospital before I could put enough weight on it to transfer to the rehab unit. A week in rehab now home pain is tolerable if I don't do anything. But I did not have any pain in my hip before surgery??? Has anyone ever had this? Did a MRI in hospital said it showed severe swelling and three bulging disc but she said neither should be causing that kind of pain?? Just want to know what happened. Thx
