L5-S1 herniated left side NOW symptoms on right side?

Hi people I have been lurking on this site for a good few months now and have learnt a lot from your experiences!

I will try and keep it short ha!

I herniated last November went to chiropractor for around 2months with little relief , kept working through this pain until it got so bad I couldn't walk! March time this year went for a private mri which shows left s1 compression over 50% reduction to spinal canal! At that time I came off work and haven't been back since! I had serve tingling and numbness in outside foot all the way up to the left glute! after months of stretching and exercising the pain finally eased! Went to physio for 2 months which gave me flexibility and improved my pain! Around 4 weeks ago the pain was a 1 at the left side so I started taking up yoga! After 2 sessions I started having burning pain in my right side and is progressively getting worse! Now the burning pain is in my right hamstring and top of knee? Went to see a different physio he said go back to basic and just do McKenzie exercise for now? I am doing to much in stretching wise and over doing it or is this all part of the healing process? Anyone with same experiences will be much appreciated ! I am 24 and from the UK Ive seen one doctor in 9months who has referred me to a spine specialist which is a waiting list for around 6 months!

  • Hello!
I herniated a disc  in my neck on both sides (though burning pain mainly on right side). I was just wondering (if the burning doesn't settle down) whether it would be worth calling the specialist you've been referred to and saying your symptoms have changed/progressed in case they can move you up the waiting list. (I suppose lots of people are in a similar position though...).
    Good luck!

Hi NZ1025 how are you feeling today!

I think I over done it the other day I think I'm rushing too much to get back into things! It has seemed to settle down but still get a light burning in hamstring !

I can't seem to get hold of my specialist as the receptionist says il send her an email! This person has referred me to a spinal consultant so I'm waiting to talk to him!

Ive been looking at getting a flexibak the wooden device you had any experience with this?

    Hey,

I'm doing ok, thanks. About 8 weeks post-op surgery now, and a bit sorer for the last week, but it's easing up now...

I'm not sure if your specialist has talked to you about whether your symptoms are coming from compression of the nerve roots or compression of the spinal cord - that might help to  clear up why you are having symptoms on both sides...

I haven't got experience with the flexibak... I went to physio for a year or so - and that helped a lot for the muscle pain etc- but it never helped the burning pain. (but everyone is different...)

  • Hi ya Welshguy   I am from the UK and understand the waiting issue all too well!

Not sure when you were referred but I would either go back to the doctor that referred you and tell them about changes and see if they can push on an appointment or alternatively, find out the consultant's secretary's direct number and phone to report changes and worsening pain.

I am guessing a copy of your MRI has been sent with the referral.  If not, get one to the hospital of referral as soon as possible if it is a different one to where you had the MRI.  Some hospitals have links to data but not sure about Wales.

You mentioned McKenzie exercises and my first physio had the training. but sadly I never got the opportunity to experience any. My condition was too severe and I bypassed physio to MRI to surgery (took 9 months from herniation!).  I was pleased to read he had that training and think it would be better than yoga for you at the moment.

You may find it beneficial to learn about nerve pathways in your legs.  This may help you identify which disc/area of your back is causing your new pain.  Your description of 'top of your knee' wasn't clear if back or front of leg.  If it is the front of your leg it may be a different area in your back.

Hope this helps and let us know how you progress

  • Hey AJ sorry for late reply!
Ive seen one musculoskeletal doctor who referred me to a spine specialist this person I can't get through directly and the receptionist keeps saying il pass the message on!

Ive had a private MRI and she didn't take a copy so no one has that at the moment ! I'm at a lost cause here because I've not got anyone to see! I'm waiting for this oppointnent with this spinal specialist who hopefully can help!

I had no problems with the right leg until I did 2 sessions of yoga and it crept up on me and haven't gone away! I get a burning sensation in the right hamstring to the back of the knee it seems to come and go! If one doesn't hurt the other one does!

Im not progressing any further now I'm at a standstill don't get me wrong it's a lot better but still having trouble !

How are you feeling after the op? Was it worth it ? I'm at the 9month mark too!

    Hope is well
  • Good morning :-) sorry for delay.

I am wondering if you have requested copy of MRI as I think you should have been given one as you paid for it! I had to pay to get a copy of mine through the NHS but glad I now have copy of all the MRI images they have taken in the last three years. Your images should still be within their system to download onto disc.

Re your progress. You may just be getting warning signs to tell you to ease up. However, I would push for a copy of that MRI and have it ready to take to your appointment when you go. It could speed up the process of treatment for you. Any trapped nerve pain should be taken seriously as the nerve damage can be lasting and takes an age to heal ... nerve healing is the tortoise of the healing world! Keep contacting the secretary as the squeaking cogs get the oil!

I have had two operations so far and now on a waiting list for double level lumbar fusion. We were conservative in our approach to surgery but unfortunately it just wasn't enough for my 'all knackered' lumbar discs .. consultants term when I asked him to show me a disc of normal height on my images! He knows me well and so the wording was acceptable and realistic. That is how I roll - prefer to know the truth when I ask direct questions. I am fully aware that my future could be tough but at least I know I am not going to get a quick fix and need to take any progression as positive along the way.

Look after that back and try to preserve what you have. Any advice should be taken and used to achieve this.

I have L4 /L5 disc herniated with bone spur including spinal stenosis identified by MRI five months ago. Had Steroid tabs for 3 weeks, two epidural injections, physical therapy, and Cortisone shot for bursitis. Having given the picture,  severe pain in am and almost all day on lower back but more on right hip and buttocks. It travels upto knee. Pain relief works with heat and PT. Narcotic pain meds. works a bit but messes up my stomach.  Gabapentin doesn't seem to work. When in severe pain, I  use cold pack. It works.
Considering Stenosis surgery. Walking around and standing helps. Use very hard bed, sleep on side with pillow between knees helps. Recommended not to use bucket seat while driving.  Driving is hard and increases pain. Using Van with hard seat.
Lie down no more than 30 minutes for pain. Lie down as little  as possible unless in pain.
Be active. Sitting longer than 20 minutes hurts.
