my husband had cervical fusion 4-7 nov 14th  been in hospital 4 times since then.  He had so much swelling on the inside of his troat and it practically closed up.  Had modified barium swallow and found he is aspirating.  he has 82 prednisone pills to take.  Does anyone know if this will get better and he will be able to eat on his own.  He is now on liquid that goes in feeding  tube.  Very depressing for him.  Has another  modified barium swallow in 7 days. His vocal chords are swollen

    Parker,

    Welcome to Spine-Health!

It sounds like your husband hit the lotto in post ACDF potential complications.  I believe that there are ways to increase the size and  function of the throat and esophagus.  First they will address the swelling - thus the prednisone.

Post op times can vary - any complications will add the need for more recovery time.

Please keep us posted on how he is doing and I feel badly that this has occurred.

    With Concern,

    MN
  • Oh my goodness hopefully the prednisone will get the swelling under control. Seems like your husband has had a rough recovery to say the least.

Some of us a slew of complications, some have none at all. It is hard to tell how any one person will heal as every person is different.

Please keep us updated on his progress. I send my deepest concern and warmest wishes for a fast recovery.
