HELP!! right hip in bad pain this a.m. and can barely walk!!

Hi everyone!

This is the second time in 6mths that I have had my right hip do this. Both times I have just woke up in excrutiating pain! The pain is definetly(sp?) in the hip joint itself and it hurts into the groin area and also toward the outside of my hip (like if you rub the side part of your hip that runs with the seam of your jeans (sorry best way I could think of to describe it). Thankfully I have just went to my pain clinic appt on Tues and have my pain meds so when I woke up this morning and realized what I had going on I just went ahead and took them first thing. Then waited a few minutes and attemped a shower, which I did my best at, and then when I got out I put some theragesic rub on it (its like icy hot). I have made it to work but only by the Grace of God. I had to drive with my left leg/foot which was akward but I have done it before and when I went to get something to drink all the regulars in the store was asking what was wrong. When I told them it was my RA acting up they were like "Oh now come on! You are too young to have that! What did you REALLY do?" I hate that! But as we all know we have to live with that too. But I made it work and now I am thinking that as soon as the pain clinic opens that I should call them and see what they say. Do you all think that's a good idea? I didnt want to come to work today but I had to since I had already missed Tues to go to the pain clinic dr appt. And if anyone out there has any suggestions on what to do to ease this pain off or flat out get rid of it I am sooo open for suggestions! So please HELP!! lol Trying to laugh so I wont cry.

Have a great day,

  • Karen,

I would strongly recommend calling a doc of some sorts. Whether it be your GP or the Pain Clinic, it all depends on how your treatment is being managed.

Do you have an alternative means for getting home? Driving left footed isn't exactly the safest thing to do and all you need to make your day worse, is to have a MVA that is deemed your own fault. Especially if they ask if you are taking any medications ...

I hope your day gets better and your pain far less.

  • karen,
I agree with C, it is not safe to drive left footed . at the risk of sounding hippocritical, i have done the same thing because i had no other choice. I almost wrecked as well. please be careful today and remember to ice ice ice until you get some help from the doc. good luck and have a better day.

  • oh thank you all!

i know that my lefty driving wasnt the best but you know how it is when you HAVE to go to work. i am going to call my pain dr first to see what they say and go from there. i didnt know that i should use ice. i would have thought heat would have been better? can you tell me more about that? i hope you all have pain free days for sure!

    big hugs,

  • Sorry for your morning! I just sent you a pm of thanks for the advise on pain clinics. Try posting in the forum for sciatia, leg pain, lower back. I have very mild problems in this area and have gotten great advise on streching, walking/stationary bikes/heat-ice/ etc.. also this site and the old spine-health has a great search tool by catagory that with a few key words can bring up old posts that address the same issues. Keep trying it works. Please be careful and if you need help....ASK!!! michael k
  • Hi Karen,
I have a very similar problem, don't know that it is the same, however, it's on my left side. And, you described it perfectly, (thank you!), in fact, I've never thought of it that way, but you've helped me with a good description now, " like the seam down the side of your jeans"....it's just that... the pain is down that hip seam side.

I also hurt down my lower back too, but that's a different story, what I wanted to tell you is I do use heat, sometimes I've turned the heated seat on in the car! Yes, with the a/c on, of course (lol).

But, ice helps me better. I have bought several of these resuable blue ice paks called "Colpacs Cold Therapy", they come in different sizes, 8" by 11" I think is one size and another larger one ...they also come in black and I have one of those that my husband thinks may be somewhat stronger in fact. But, they are wonderful.....they are made by the Chattanooga Group and can be seen on line or bought at a medical pharmacy, which is where I bought mine. I have three, which I just keep in the freezer and I alternate between them, as needed.

I have even taken one with me and put behind my back while driving, it doesn't always last long in this heat, just depends how far I'm going, but with the a/c on, it gets me there. Hey, it works! I've taken a little ice chest with ice along with us when we've gone places to keep one cold as long as possible and kept one in the freezer if going someplace where there was a refrigerator with a freezer. Or, when desperate, make yourself an icepack with a good baggie filled with ice, you just have to be very careful it doesn't leak.

I have had all kinds of injections and nothing helps, my medication is the only thing that gives me any relief and it is not long lasting, but I've tried so many and finally found this one medication that gives me a little relief. I'm in the process of changing doctors and just hope I will be able to continue on this medication.

I have "central pain" as a result of a mild stroke and people don't understand the pain I go thru every day either, some people never will, no matter what age you are, honey, so don't let that bother you. Only until it happens to them will they understand, so we can talk until we are blue in the face and they still won't get it! So, just take care of yourself. Remember, Pain is something people can't see. We put a little mascare and lipstick on and we look fine, they will never believe we are in pain.

Be careful, just worry about yourself, stress only causes more pain.

    Take care,

  • Thanks Michael k and Sandy!

I do go to a pain clinic and i called them and since i am already scheduled for a SI injection on the 13th there's really nothing else they can do for me until then. They said that its because if they give me a shot now and on the 13th also that would be double the steroids and you dont want all those in your system, which I do understand. So I just have to try and tough it out until then. I am on the duragesic patch and percocet for break thru but its just still not enough. I am trying really hard to get thru this work day though. Sandy I too have lower back pain and also have pain in my neck down to about where my bra strap goes. All this plus RA, DDD and DJD is just not fun! But I would rather laugh than cry. I have 3 kids to raise, one of which is disabled and my husband is a disabled Army veteran too. I told my hubby that between the two of us we are so broken that we dont even have a good trade in value so we are just stuck with each other!! lol Sandy, you are right, other people will never understand unless they have to deal with it. I wouldnt wish this on anyone but I just wish that people would realize that you dont have to be old to have arthritis. My grandfather had RA and it was in the same places I have it. I have seen him bedridden to a hospital bed for mths and I have seen him crawl around the house and to the bathroom cause he was in such bad shape that he couldnt walk but he kept on going, so that's what I am gonna do! If I have to crawl, I guess I will just have to crawl but I wont give up that's for sure. Any time that you all want or need to talk just PM me!

you take care of yourself too!
  • I also have the same pain that you are speaking of. I wanted to tell you all that they make something called a back buddy that is long enough to cover your entire low back. It has a velcro belt on it so you can actually walk around with it on if needed. It is great. You can heat it in the micro and you get wet heat which is the best or you can keep it in the freezer for an ice pack. I could not live without it! When you heat it in the micro it stays warm for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. It has been a lifesaver for me on many occasions. Also, please remember if you ice only do 20 minutes on and 20 off. Keeping a large bag of frozen veggies on hand is good if you do not have the back buddie. Much softer and flexible than hard ice cubes.
  • thank you! i will look to see if i can find that!
