Severe Muscle Spasms

Evening All,

I wonder if anyone has experienced this before?  Brief history - had an L5-S1 disc/laminectomy in 2009, followed by about 3 years of epidurals and facet joint injections to deal with general pain and discomfort.  Things seemed to be OK and I regularly go to the gym and do yoga.

But about 2 months ago, I woke up to extreme muscle spasms, and extreme discomfort (6-7 on the pain scale).  I treated it with muscle relaxants (Some, Robaxin) and anti-inflammatories (Arthotec and/or Mobic) and things seemed to be going OK...I took the Soma at night, meant I could wake up in the morning and get out of bed to take the day-time relaxants.  By noon my spasms stopped.  When I experienced pain before it was a dull ache, this was severe and shooting down my back from my rib cage to my butt and across my stomach. Totally different feeling.

But the frequency and severity of the pain increased big time...so I went to visit my pain specialist who ordered an MRI which showed no further disc degeneration since my surgery...he gave me an epidural in my thoracic as that is where the pain felt like it was originating.  The next day I was screaming in pain with the spasms, so we proved it wasn't originating from my thoracic.  I have to have a follow up with him in a week or so.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Thank you!
