l5 s1 disk protrusion and DDD

i have been suffering from chronic pain from a large broad based left paracentral disk protrusion indenting the thecal sac and DDD. I have been experiencing sharp shooting pains on my left buttock and it goes along the whole backside of my thigh to my knee. Sometimes it get shooting pain to my growing area also. My question is what can be causing this? Would it be the disk protrusion or DDD. My other question is if I have DDD on my l5 s 1 and a disk protrusion on the same area should the disk protrusion cause less pain since it is dehydrated and has loss of disk height. I know this might be a stupid question to ask.

  • Hello, Jonnyboy04!

Come now...there is NO such thing as a stupid question!!

I can see so much of what I went through with my lumbar spine in your post!--right down to the path of the shooting pains you described.  Man, those pains and spasms would stop me cold in my tracks!!  When I went from being able to take 10-15 steps without pain to 2-3, I knew it was time to schedule the surgery that had been recommended for me (L4-S1 fusion).

Have you spoken to a specialist about what some of your options are?  What kinds of treatments have you tried so far?  I can with 1000% conviction that, for me, living in pain wasn't living at all.  I do hope that a good discussion with a specialist might help you to discover treatment options that would help you to get some relief.

  • I have been going to a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor. And he had me do physical therapy, which made matters worse. Now he has me doing acupuncture which my first appointment is next week, I'll see how that goes. But other than that he gave me baclofen and 5/325 hydrocodone +3 daily. I was on 10/325 but when I got a refill the messed up and gave me 5/325 which I'm supposed to take one every 8 hours which I have been but I only get moderate relief for a good 4-5 hours, and that's not including the severe pain in my left leg. I don't want to be on pain meds for a long time as I know that it's only a bandaid. But without it won't be able to even go to work or even spend time with my kids and wife. I even had to stop driving bus for the school because I can sit for more than 10 minutes without have severe pains, and on top of that I don't want to even hop in a bus with meds I'm taking
