Sciatica after OLIF L5-S1 surgery on 3/8/17

Anyone else out there run into this? I'm 39 yo male, a week and half out from olif(alif) fusion. The first week went very well, little pain, and now this new pain which fits with sciatica.  Gets bad with standing, throbbing pins and needles, hard to stand long enough to void it hurts so bad. Any advice would be much appreciated. Starting to ice the back.

  • I had nasty sciatic nerve issues, and had L5/S1 fusion surgery (w/ a titanium souvenir) two years ago. My sciatic pain actually got slightly worse after the surgery. The doctor said that wasn't too surprising or unusual; he had to do a lot of work in my case (removal of a couple of cysts, cleaning up a lot of arthritis, bone spurs, etc), and he predicted that the nerve would be irritated/inflamed for "a while."  I suffered for an additional 2 1/2 months after surgery....and then the sciatic pain disappeared almost overnight.
