Collagen Definition

Collagen is a fibrous protein that is the primary constituent of connective tissue. The substance acts as a glue holding tissues together and forming an essential part of bone, tendons, ligaments and cartilage.

Collagen is inelastic but has considerable tensile strength in its ability to resist forces of stretching. Collagen is also responsible for skin elasticity and its degradation leads to wrinkles that come with age.
