Osteopathic Medicine Definition

Osteopathic medicine is a field of medicine that emphasizes normal body mechanics and manipulation to correct faulty body structures, particularly the nerves, muscles, bones and joints. Osteopathic medicine is one of the two health fields nationally recognized as complete schools of medicine.

An osteopathic physician, also known as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), diagnoses and treats all illnesses and injuries and emphasizes preventive care. For the treatment of back pain, an osteopathic physician can employ massage and manipulation of the joints in the spine to correct misalignment and encourage self-healing.
