How should I sleep if I have back pain at night?

Your specific type of back pain and back condition(s) can impact your choice of sleep positions, and in turn can impact which mattress firmness is better for your sleep.

A few sleep position guidelines:
  • The most comfortable position for those with low back pain is lying on the back, usually with the knees slightly elevated by a small pillow. Patients who are experiencing a severe bout of back pain or have recently undergone spinal surgery may also find this position the most comfortable.
  • For side sleepers: reduce stress on the lower spine and hips by placing a pillow between the knees.
  • For stomach sleepers: reduce stress on the spine by placing a flat pillow under the stomach and hips.
  • Medium-firm mattresses are better for back pain than firmer mattresses, which can cause pain in pressure points such as the hips and shoulders.
